DiPietro not in lineup again

SC Riessersee played their first game in 8 days today, losing ...again... this time to the Fischtown Pinguins 3-1.

For the 2nd straight game Rick DiPietro did not play, or even dress.  Hmm.

Riessersee is dead last in their (2nd) division, with just 1 win in 11 games.

Interesting Q&A on Isles Finances from NY Times

Jeff Z Klein has a blog post on the effects on the Isles finances from the Brooklyn move.

You can find the entire post here: http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/25/islanders-brooklyn-move-raises-complex-issues/

Here's a particularly interesting set of numbers:

<<Q. Why would the Islanders move from the Coliseum, where they are tenants, to Barclays, where they will still be tenants?
A. The short answer: $35 million in extra revenue per year. That goes a long way toward wiping out the club's current operating deficit, estimated at $8 million per year.
The main benefit in this move "is not in the increased revenue the Isles will get from the average fan; it's in the huge increase they'll get from selling luxury suites and premium club seats," said Tony Knopp, chief executive officer of Spotlight TMS, a company that manages corporate tickets at Barclays Center and other sites around the country.
The Coliseum, built in 1972 and barely renovated since, has 31 luxury suites and a relatively small number of high-priced premium seats. Knopp estimates that the suites generate about $3 million a year and the premium seats about $16 million.

Barclays Center, which is far more geographically convenient to corporate customers than the Coliseum, has 104 luxury suites. Knopp estimated that those suites would generate about $21 million for the Islanders, while premium seating would generate an additional $33 million. That comes to $54 million from suites and premium seats — $35 million more per year than what the Islanders generate at the Coliseum.

"I'd happily ride the train for another 25 minutes to watch $35 million more in talent on the ice," Knopp said.

Goodbye November - more cancelations

Several sources reporting that the NHL will blow away the entire month of November today.

The Isles were scheduled to play 13 games in November, which when added to the 9 October games lost, mean that 22 of their games would have been canceled.

Of the 22 games, 12 were home games, meaning that (barring reschedulings or a buyout of the remaining years) 111 games remain on the Nassau Coliseum lease.

The earliest game remaining on the Isles schedule would be December 1st at home against Phoenix, with a visit to MSG on the calendar for the following night.  Of course, the longer this silliness goes, the less chance that the original schedule would be used in any configuration.

Former Sabres executive Larry Quinn had an interesting analysis (from ESPN.com) that both sides should read:

"No matter what system there is and no matter how much fear is instilled in the players about what the future is going to be, the future is that they're always going to make more money. Always; no matter what the system is," Quinn explained. "The proof is in the pudding from the last CBA that their salaries went up 30 percent, and that CBA was supposed to be the mother of all salary reductions.

"Given the fact they've got $3.3 billion in revenue, I believe instead of fighting each other all the time, if there was a clear collaborative effort between players and owners once and for all, that $3.3 billion could be $5 billion. The NHL needs a culture more like the NFL and less like MLB."

First NHL Team to Play Home Games in Brooklyn in 2015

BROOKLYN, NY (October 24, 2012) -- New York Islanders Owner Charles B. Wang, Barclays Center Majority Owner and Developer Bruce Ratner, and Onexim Sports and Entertainment announced today that the Islanders will move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The 25-year agreement begins for the 2015-16 season.
The announcement was made at a press conference in the GEICO Atrium at Barclays Center, which was also attended by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Islanders General Manager Garth Snow, and Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark.
In support of the illustrious history of the team, the New York Islanders name and logo will remain unchanged.
"It was our goal from day one to keep the Islanders in the local New York area." Wang said. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to play in Barclays Center, a first class arena. This has been a long journey for the Islanders family starting with our loyal fans, sponsors, and employees. I want to personally thank them for their patience, loyalty, and support. I am excited about today's announcement and I am looking forward to a long and successful future in Brooklyn."
"We are delighted to welcome the Islanders to Brooklyn and to bring NHL hockey to the borough for the first time," Ratner said. "Eleven subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road come directly to Barclays Center at Atlantic Terminal, offering great accessibility for current and future Islander fans. I want to thank Charles for his determination in keeping the team in New York and for having the vision to bring his club to Brooklyn."
"More than ever before, Brooklyn is the place where everyone wants to be," Mayor Bloomberg said. "Barclays Center has already brought an incredible amount of excitement to Brooklyn since opening last month. Now things will get even more interesting, with Brooklyn's first-ever NHL franchise. Whether or not you're a hockey fan, more events at Barclays Center will lead to more economic activity and more jobs, and that's good news for all New Yorkers."
"Today is another great day for Brooklyn," BP Markowitz said. "When I first campaigned for Borough President, I made the promise that I would bring a major-league sports team to Brooklyn. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I think we would be home to both the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Islanders. With the Nets and the Islanders, Brooklyn is beginning a dominant power-play."
"The Brooklyn Nets are excited to welcome the Islanders to Barclays Center and Brooklyn!" Yormark said. "Barclays Center will offer the Islanders with an exciting opportunity to grow their fan base and to build their brand. Islander fans are going to love Barclays Center for its intimacy, sightlines, Brooklyn Taste culinary program, and customer service. We are looking forward to opening our doors for the Islanders and bringing the best in sports and entertainment to Brooklyn."
Barclays Center will hold 14,500 seats for Islander games. Current Islander season ticket holders will have first rights to purchase season tickets in Brooklyn. Kate Murray Lies: Coliseum is booked vast majority of other 320 nights

From Newsday.com

<<(Kate) Murray added that the Islanders only use the facility for about one-seventh of the year.

"There are still 320 days where events take place," she said. "I'm not trying to minimize their brand appeal, and the fact that we're all Islanders. But the fact remains that the vast majority of days will remain booked up, and always have been."

Murray said she had many fond personal memories of attending the Coliseum, including receiving a hockey stick from Islanders legend Denis Potvin on her 16th birthday.
>>

For the record, the Arena was booked a grand total of 2 nights this month (other than the canceled Islander games): Tonight's Knicks/Nets game and a concert on Saturday.

Kate Murray Speaks!

From the Patch:
"I am disappointed to learn of the Islanders' plan to relocate to Brooklyn," Murray said. "They've been a valued part of this region's identity, and we wish the team great success in the future. We hope Long Islanders will continue to cheer for the team."

Kate will now look to build a large selection of homeless shelters on the Coliseum grounds. (Well, maybe not)

Where will #isles practice?

For now, Charles is saying IceWorks in Syosset but IceWorks is a schlep to Brooklyn  (although really no more than Greenburgh, NY to MSG)

One possibility: Brooklyn has a facility with 2 ice rinks right off the Belt Parkway: Aviator Sports & Recreation.

There's even an Islander connection there: former Islander owner Steven Gluckstern was part of the original ownership that opened the facility about 7 years ago.

Of course, there's a Ranger connection too. MSG purchased an interest in the facility shortly after it opened.

I don't believe that either connection exists today.

Subject: NYSun.com: Isles to Brooklyn?

<<Political Fallout Could Land the Islanders in Brooklyn
The Business of Sport

By EVAN WEINER
September 21, 2005

The New York Islanders franchise has always been more a topic
for Nassau County politics, cable TV, and real estate than it
has been a sports team competing in a major professional league.
Almost 34 years after the NHL gave Roy Boe an expansion
franchise in Uniondale, not much has changed. Islanders owner
Charles Wang is currently wrangling with Nassau County
politicians to develop land around the Nassau Coliseum and has a
large cable TV security blanket.

But Nassau County politicians shouldn't feel so smug about the
long-term prospects of having an NHL team - not with Nets owner
Bruce Ratner's new Brooklyn arena in the picture. As the
centerpiece of the urban development being proposed for the
Atlantic Yards, Ratner's arena is slated to house the Nets and
other, yet unplanned, sports events. That could mean hockey.

deHaan gone for year

Training camp hasn't even started (will it ever?) and the Isles have already lost a defenseman for the season.  Mike Fornabaio has reported, and the Sound Tigers have confirmed, that Calvin deHaan is gone for the season with a dislocated left shoulder.

deHaan had 2 assists for the Sound Tigers this season.  This is the third straight season that deHaan has missed time with a shoulder injury.

deHaan is in the middle year of his 3 year entry-level contract.

NHL blows away another week of the schedule

No surprise here -- the NHL canceled all games thru 11/1.

This cancels three additional Islander games (10/26 vs Toronto, 10/27 @ Boston and 10/31 vs Ottawa). However, these games would be rescheduled if the NHL and its players can agree on a new CBA within the next week.  If so, the Islanders would open the season on November 2nd in Carolina.
Nine Islander games have been canceled at this point (5 at home and 4 on the road).  Barring makeups, this leaves 118 games on the Nassau Coliseum
lease.

The press release from the League notes: "The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective
Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL" which of course isn't really true.  Many sports leagues (and other businesses) have continued operation without a CBA in place.

And so it goes...

NHL proposal has favorable clauses for Islander fans

At least 3 of the clauses proposed by the NHL could have significant ramifications for the Isles.

1. Isles would be eligible for revenue sharing.  (Under the expired CBA, teams in larger television markets were not eligible)
2. Teams would not be eligible to stash players in minors and avoid salary cap hit.  Call this the Wade Redden rule, but the Isles would not be at a disadvantage that they have been in the past when compared to teams that are more easily able to bury their mistakes.

However, it's the third point that is the most important:

"We are proposing that a Club's Lower Limit obligation be satisfied without reference to (or inclusion of) performance bonuses. This will effectively increase the minimum commitment of actual compensation paid by the "Lower Limit Clubs" to Players. The proposal acknowledges the League's agreement to a request made by the NHLPA earlier in our negotiations."

In English, it means that teams must pay the bottom of the salary cap range and not use bonuses, which were often not attained, to reach that point.  This has several different effects:
1. Teams no longer have an incentive to keep underachieving young players with large bonuses on the NHL roster.  It will be more practical to send players either to the AHL or (if age-appropriate) back to juniors.
2. Other than entry-level contracts, only "over 35" players were eligible for bonuses.   Again, this change will make adding a player on the back end of his career with a difficult to achieve bonus less practical.

Several teams have used players in these situations in recent years.  From an Islander perspective, it would actually have less effect this season than in the past because the core players have now entered their second contracts.  Among the players it could effect are the following, all of whom would have have a bonus of at least $600,000 contributing to the cap hit if they were on the NHL roster:

(thanks, capgeek.com)

NHL Salary Cap Hit Bonus
Niederreiter, Nino »  $900,000 $2,795,000 $1,925,000
Reinhart, Griffin »  $925,000 $3,275,000 $2,350,000
Nelson, Brock »  $900,000 $2,825,000 $1,925,000
Halmo, Mike »  $742,500 $1,775,000 $1,032,500
Nilsson, Anders »  $900,000 $1,750,000 $850,000
Strome, Ryan »  $925,000 $1,744,167 $850,000
de Haan, Calvin »  $900,000 $1,470,000 $600,000

(cap hit does not equal salary + bonus because cap hit is averaged over the entire contract)

From a practical standpoint, some of the revenue share money could go to pay the additional salary that the team will have to pay to satisfy the cap floor.

DiPietro's German team beaten again --this time on a penalty shot ... in overtime.

I tweeted last evening two brief notes:

Rick DiPietro's German tm lost in OT tonight 5-4-Winnipeg native Kevin Saurette completed a hat trick by beating DP on an OT pen shot #isles
Kevin Saurette, who had 3 goals vs DiPietro today scored 2 goals in 27 career AHL games--never played in NHL--5th ssn in Germany.

A little more color --it was DiPietro 2nd German start.

As it was after his first start, the google translate provides a bit of a giggle:
http://www.eishockey.net/201210178147/esv-kaufbeuren/kevin-saurette-in-der-verlangerung-der-matchwinner.html

<<ESV Kaufbeuren Bundesliga. Meets again youngster Markus Eisenschmid. Those who are already Matt D'Agostini and Rick DiPietro especially? Even two NHL players in the SC Riessersee services, including one of the most expensive goalkeeper in the world could that selflessly struggling young Kaufbeurer force before 1233 spectators not obstruct the way to the third round of the DEB Cup.
Converted a penalty to 5:4 in extra time and two other gates Kevin Saurette sticking out of a homogeneous force out yet.
Ken Latta ordered, in contrast to his notice, to provide back-up John Wiedemann match practice, again the far superior Stefan Vajs into the goal. After just 27 seconds outwitted Louke Oakley NHL goalie DiPietro and took his team 1-0 in front.
....
The second period belonged to the first of Wertach townspeople who walked again by Kevin Saurette lead. With a strong team performance and an outstanding goalkeeper Stefan Vajs the red and yellow braced against the attacks of Werdenfelser and were rewarded after 37 minutes again. The 17-year old Markus Eisenschmid overcame DiPietro to 2:4 and will forget that evening in his life probably never farther.
....

After referee Roland Seckler in the subsequent extension following a challenge by Benedict Kastner decided on penalty, had Kevin Saurette against NHL goalie DiPietro's decision on the racket. And the Canadians did not miss this unique opportunity, the Garmisch were loaded keeper and netted the 5-4 victory, and the red and yellow did so with great jubilation in the next cup round.>>

NHL offer a hit with fans

Interesting to read some of the comments on TSN.ca to the NHL's proposal.  Seems like the new proposal hit a nerve with fans -- check out the most favorably rated comments:

50/50 is a great offer and the players should take it - if they refuse, they can kiss the little public support they have goodbye!! Well done NHL! Report this comment!
50/50 split and salvage all 82 games. Sounds fair to me. Take it and lets play some hockey. Report this comment!
TAKE IT!!!!!! Report this comment!
NHL just made a 50-50 revenue split offer. If they PA doesn't accept this offer I don't know anymore. Report this comment!
All the owners should just meet with the PA and lay their duckies on the table. What's the point of Bettman, Daly, Donald and Steve Fehr being involved, I mean seriously. Having these guys doing the talking is like having our wives negotiating the next fishing trip. Report this comment!
If the players don't take this, they become the bad guys. Report this comment!
Donald Fehr said the offer - which is at least six years in length - is an 'excellent start' ....................................... DON'T MESS THIS UP FEHR! Don't you do it.... Report this comment!
Great offer take it!!!!!!!! I want hockey! Report this comment!
If Fehr does not take this - The Union/Players are 100 % Responsible for this Lockout. Report this comment!
No rollback and a reasonable attempt at an 82-game schedule? Take it PA, please take it! Report this comment!
Fehr says it's an 'excellent start'. A start, this should be the finish! Report this comment!
The NHL has earned my respect 100 % Not only have they set down 2 offeres in a row, but they have stop playing around and dropped a real deal on the table ! If the PA does not take this deal, we know they are trying to sabatoge this NHL season !! Report this comment!
Obviously don't have all the details - but 50/50 split, no salary roll back? If the NHLPA rejects this, they ought to be ashamed. Report this comment!

Well done NHL... if the PA turns this down they're clearly the bad guys in public opinion. Report this comment!

If by some chance this comes to pass, the Isles (pending the scheduling of these additional games) would open with 4 out of 5 on the road. They would open November 2 at Carolina and then return home the following day to face Dallas, before visiting the three California teams.

The Isles are scheduled to be in Los Angeles on Tuesday, November 6th.  That would not however be the Kings banner raising ceremony -- LA's first home game would be November 3rd at 4pm ET, against St. Louis in a game scheduled to be carried on NHL Network.
