"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick
Game 56
Washington 3, Isles 2 (OT)
Justin Williams scored with 44 seconds remaining in overtime for the deciding tally as the Washington Capitals overcame a late tying goal by Frans Nielsen and defeated the Islanders 3-2 before a sellout crowd of 15,795 at Barclays Center.

John Tavares had given the Islanders a first period lead, but Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of goals 1:27 apart in the second period to give the Caps the lead.
The Caps became the first NHL team to open a season by winning 42 of their first 56 games.

The Isles are 4-1-1 in their last six games, as they remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division, one point ahead of Pittsburgh and two ahead of New Jersey.

The Skinny:
The sellout was the Isles' 2nd straight and seventh of the season.  The Isles are 3-1-3 in those seven games… The Isles are 12-11-2 in their last 25; they have outscored opponents 56-25 in the 12 wins (12-0-0), but have been outscored 46-17 in the 13 losses (0-11-2)… The Isles have outscored their opponents 62-44 in the third period this season, including 20-6 over the last 14 games… John Tavares extended his point streak to seven games (5-6-11) …The Isles failed to score  a power play goal for the first time in seven games…The Isles are 4-0-1 in their last five games at home… Thomas Greiss set new career highs in both games (26) and starts (21).  His 16 wins are six more than he has won in any previous NHL season… Tavares won a majority of his face-offs for the 12th straight game; he was won 63.9% of his draws in that span…The Isles are 2-5-2 in Metropolitan Division games in 2016; the Isles went 7-0-2 vs. the Met before the calendar change…The Caps improve to 32-0-1 when leading after two periods…Alex Ovechkin scored twice for Washington, giving him 30 goals in 40 career games against the Isles.  Ovechkin now had 512 career goals…The Isles failed to score on the power play against Washington again; counting playoffs, the Isles have not scored a power play goal vs. the Caps in the last 11 games…Justin Williams recorded his third regular season overtime goal…An Islander defenseman has points on the last six goals by the team.
Moving On Up
Josh Bailey played in his 531st game as an Islander, passing Pat LaFontaine for 21st place on the Isles' all-time list…Frans Nielsen's tying goal was his 333rd Islander point, tying Tomas Jonsson for 17th place on the Isles' all-time list.  Kyle Okposo earned his 350th point on the same play.
The Captain's Countdown
John Tavares scored his 196th goal; with four more goals he will become only the 11th player in Islander history to record 200 goals.
Most Points in The Post-Cup Era through 56 games

67 in 2015-16
65 in 2001-02
64 in 1985-86

Home Sweet Home
The Isles are 19-8-4 on home-ice (42 points).  In the past 28 years, the Isles have earned more than 42 points in the first 31 home games only twice (46 in first 31 at home last season and 44 in 31 in 2003-04).
The Isles have clinched an above NHL-.500 finish at home.  It is the first time since 2005-06 and 2006-07 that the Isles have recorded successive home seasons above NHL-.500.

Schedule Notes
The Isles will begin a 7-game road trip in New Jersey tomorrow.  This is the 5th time in club history that the Isles will play seven consecutive road games, but the 2nd consecutive season:
·         1981-82 (1-5-1)
·         2000-01 (2-3-2)
·         2009-10 (3-2-2)
·         2014-15 (5-2-0)
The Isles are also beginning a stretch of 12 out of 14 games on the road for only the 2nd time in their history.  From November 11 – December 9, 2009 (John Tavares' rookie season), the Isles went 5-7-2 in a stretch in which they played 12 of 14 on the road.   However the Isles changed time zones only twice in that stretch (When they visited Minnesota and St. Louis).  The Isles will change time zones seven times in their upcoming trips.

The long trips come after the Isles have played 31 of their first 56 games at home.  It is only the second time that they have played 31 home games so early in the season; it 2002-03, the Isles played 31 of their first 55 games at home.  Had the Isles not been snowed out on January 23rd vs. Philadelphia, the Isles would have played 32 of their first 56 games at home.  The Isles have never played their 32nd home game earlier than their 59th game.

Road Warriors
This was the eighth game of a 22 game stretch in which the Isles will play 16 games on the road.  The Isles are 4-3-1 in this stretch.   Beginning tomorrow in New Jersey, the Isles will play 14 of their next 16 games on the road.
