Ryan Strome led a balanced attack with a goal and an assist while Thomas Greiss fell just 63 seconds short of his first shutout of the season as the Isles headed into Christmas with a 2-game win streak after a convincing 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres before a crowd of 13,852 at Barclays Center.
The Isles spent the final 14:25 with a lead of at least four goals in their most one-sided victory of the season.

The Skinny:
The Isles scored the first goal for the 12th time in the last 14 games … Calvin de Haan's goal was the 21st by the Isles' defense this season; only Philadelphia (22) has more…The Isles are 9-0-2 when leading after two periods… Anthony Beauvillier scored for the second time in three games, Ryan Strome scored for the third time in five games and John Tavares tallied for the first time in six games…Zemgus Girgensons' goal broke up Thomas Greiss' shutout bid; the Isles have blanked the Sabres 15 times, more than any other opponent…13 different Islanders had points, including the two from Ryan Strome (his 2nd multi-point game of the season)…A scoring change on the Isles' power play goal took the goal away from Anders Lee and gave it to John Tavares; the change also extended Josh Bailey's assist streak to three games…The Isles power play scored for the second straight game; they head into the break 3-9 (33%) in the last four games…Neither Kyle Okposo (in his first game at Barclays against the Isles) nor Matt Moulson figured in the scoring; Okposo was saluted at the first media timeout in the first period…Dennis Seidenberg and Travis Hamonic each had two assists as the Isles defense combined for five points...Buffalo is winless in the last four games (0-2-2)…The Isles improve to 5-4-2 in December and 7-4-2 in their last 13 games…The Isles have scored at least four goals in consecutive games for the first time this season; their nine goals over the last two games matches a season high (10/21-10/23 vs. Arizona and Minnesota)…The Isles outshot the Sabres 32-29; it's the first time in 17 games that the Isles had at least three more shots than the opposition…Shane Prince assisted on the Beauvillier goal, giving him 11 points (4-7-11) on the 13 Islander goals for which he has been on-ice.
The Greiss is Still Right (sorry, it's easy!)
Thomas Greiss recorded his 2nd straight win; he has stopped 76 of 79 shots (.962) in those two games.
Greiss is now 5-1-0 in his last six games and 6-2-0 in his last eight games. He has allowed two goals or less in five of those six wins.
Tavares on the PK
John Tavares saw significant time on the PK (1:30) for the second straight game. Each of his three PK shifts began with a face-off win. (He won 16 of 21 overall). Prior to Tuesday, he had never spent more than 1:26 on the penalty kill in any NHL game.
Better at 5-on-5
The Isles have outscored the opposition 70-65 when each team has five skaters, but have been outscored 35-19 in all other situations.
Milestone Man
John Tavares played in his 543rd Islander game, tying Lorne Henning for 19th place on the all-time club list.

The Isles and Capitals meet for the third time this month, and the fourth time this season as the Isles conclude a stretch in which they have played 10 of 14 games on home ice.
The teams have split a pair of games this month, with the road team earning both victories. The Caps also defeated the Isles 2-1 back on October 15th.
In their last meeting (December 13th) Matt Niskanen scored two third period goals, his first goals since March 5th, as the Caps defeated the Isles 4-2 at Barclays Center.
The Isles have held Alex Ovechkin without a point in the first three meetings; it's the first time in his career that Ovechkin has not had a point in any three-game stretch.
