 By Eric Hornick

Lee Stempniak broke a 4-4 tie with 14:18 to play as the Carolina Hurricanes scored three third period goals to defeat the Islanders 7-4 before a crowd of 16,640 at PNC Center.

John Tavares scored twice for the Isles, giving him five goals in the last two games.  A third goal, which was awarded to him after a scoring change, was later returned to Anders Lee.

Carolina improves to 14-1-1 in their last 16 home games.

The Skinny:
Rookie Brock McGinn had four points (1-3-4) while three other Hurricanes (Jordan Staal, Elias Lindholm and Lee Stempniak) each had three.  McGinn had a six point weekend for Carolina (3-3-6) …Tavares came close to becoming the first Islander since Ziggy Palffy (3/3/96 – 3/5/96) to record consecutive hat tricks…Tavares' 19 goals vs. Carolina are his highest total against any opponent…The Isles scored the first goal for the 17th time in the last 22 games…  The Isles are 0-11-1 when trailing after two periods.…Jason Chimera scored for the 2nd straight game…There were no penalties called in the game – only the fifth time in Isles history that has happened…Anthony Beauvillier earned an assist for the second straight game; he previously did that on October 21-23 vs Arizona and Minnesota…Scott Mayfield assisted on Tavares' goal for his 4th point in four NHL games this season.  Mayfield, who replaced an injured Johnny Boychuck, saw his first NHL action since December 6th vs. the Rangers…Josh Bailey had two assists for the second straight game; he now has 11 assists in the last 11 games (0-11-11); with 23 assists he now has three more than he had all last season and is just 7 assists shy of his career high (30 in 2013-14)… It is the second time this season (12/15 vs. Chicago) that the Isles have lost a game in regulation in which they had a two goal lead at some point…The Isles allowed 7 goals for the first time this season…The Isles fell back below NHL-.500 (16-17-8).

Dubie's Still in the Books
No Islander goalie has won road games on consecutive days since Wade Dubielewicz did so in Philadelphia and New Jersey on April 7 – 8, 2007.  Dubielewicz' poke check sealed a shootout win in New Jersey that sent the Isles to the playoffs that season.
