"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 37
Colorado 2, Isles 1 (OT)
Nathan McKinnon scored a power play goal with 16.1 seconds remaining in overtime as the Colorado Avalanche broke a 5-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime win over the Isles before a crowd of 14,788 at Pepsi Center.

Johnny Boychuk scored the only Islander goal, stopping a five-game streak in which the Isles scored four goals or more.

The Scoring:
1ST PERIOD
06:06    Colorado Gabriel Landeskog (7) ASST: Mikko Rantanen (12), Nathan MacKinnon (17)            0-1

2ND PERIOD
17:34    New York PPG - Johnny Boychuk (5) ASST: Nick Leddy (11), Ryan Strome (8)    1-1

3RD PERIOD

OT PERIOD
04:43    Colorado PPG - Nathan MacKinnon (10) ASST: Jarome Iginla (6), Tyson Barrie (18)            1-2

The Skinny:
The Isles allowed the first goal for only the 4th time in the last 18 games; Gabriel Landeskog's goal was only the second first period goal allowed by the Isles in the last five games … Johnny Boychuk tied Nick Leddy for the club lead in goals among defensemen (5) with the Isles' first 5-on-3 goal of the season…The Isles are 9-5-3 in the last 17 games… The Avs are 2-10-0 in their last 12 games, with both of their wins coming in overtime. … The Isles connected on a 5-on-3 as their road power play improves to 10-44 (22.7%)… The Isles have not won this season when trailing after one period (0-8-2) …Ryan Strome, who had a second-high six shots, is 4-4-8 in the last 9…Thomas Greiss is 3-0-1 in his last four and 6-1-1 in his last 8…Colorado has outscored their opponents 5-0 in overtime…Former Islander Blake Comeau played in his 599th NHL game… The Isles had 36 shots on goal, one shy of the season high (37 in Pittsburgh October 27th)

The Penalty Shot:
Matt Nieto, making his Avalanche debut, failed on a first period penalty shot. It was Thomas Greiss' second save on a penalty shot this season; he stopped San Jose's Joe Thornton in November. It was the 24th penalty shot in the NHL this season; 9 of the 24 have been successful.

All-time Islander goalies have stopped 38 of 52 opponent penalty shots, including ten straight. The last opponent to score vs. the Islanders was Los Angeles' Dustin Brown, who scored against Dwayne Roloson on November 13, 2010 -- the final game Scott Gordon served as head coach.

Milestone Men
Josh Bailey played in his 594th game, tying John Tonelli for 15th place on the all-time Isles list while John Tavares played his 547th game, tying Duane Sutter for 18th place.

Countdown to 500
John Tavares was held pointless. He needs only two points to become the 10th player in Islander history with 500 career points.

Up Next
SATURDAY, JANUARY 7th - ISLANDERS AT ARIZONA -  8:00PM
[MSG+2 (Isles pre-game at 7:30), WNYM 970AM, 88.7 WRHU-FM, 103.9 WRCN]

The Isles look to complete a sweep of the season series as they face the Coyotes in Glendale.
The Isles defeated Arizona 3-2 in Brooklyn in October and have not lost a home game in regulation to the Coyotes since 2002.  However, on the road it has been a different story as the Isles have lost three of their last four games in the desert.
The Coyotes will also be playing the back-end of a back-to-back; Arizona lost to Anaheim in overtime on Friday night.
