The Skinny: Isles 4, Ottawa 1

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 14
Isles 4, Ottawa 1
Cole Bardreau will never forget his first NHL goal; Bardreau scored on a penalty shot with 4:26 to play in the second period to break a 1-1 tie as the Isles extended their winning streak to ten straight games with a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators before a crowd of 11,212 at Barclays Center.

The ten-game winning streak is the longest in the NHL this season and the second-longest in franchise history; the Isles won 15 straight games in 1982.

Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas each scored their first goal of the season  (each off a primary assist from the other); Cizikas' goal was his 7th career shorthanded goal.   Thomas Greiss made 27 saves, allowing only a shorthanded goal to JG Pageau to record his 5th straight win.

The Isles improved to 11-3-0; their 22 points matches their second-highest total through fourteen games in the club history (11-1-1-1 for 24 points in 2001-02).

The Skinny
Derick Brassard played in his 800th career game, but saw his goals scoring streak end at a career-best five straight games… Devon Toews earned his club-leading seventh assist on Cal Clutterbuck's first goal since February 23rd. …The Isles are 9-0-0 when leading after two periods …The Isles are 5-0-0 against the Atlantic Division this season…Mathew Barzal drew his 6th penalty of the season…The Isles not only own the longest win streak in the NHL, they also have the longest active home win streak (6) and the longest active road win streak (4)… The Isles have also won six straight games in regulation (first time since winning nine straight in regulation in 1989-90)….The Isles' 6-2-0 record when allowing the first goal is the best in the NHL….JG Pageau's shorty was the first allowed by the Isles since Kevin Hayes scored for the Rangers last November 15th; the Sens share the NHL lead with four shorthanded goals…Josh Bailey scored on one of his shots on goal; he has scored on 6 of 16 shots (37.5%) this season…The Isles scored and allowed a shorthanded goal for the first time since November 28, 2017 vs. Vancouver… The Isles have outscored the opposition 16-8 in the second period this season... Over the last 7 games, the  Isles have killed 21 of 22 and scored a shorthanded goal but are 1-12 on the power play, allowing a shorthanded goal.

Young Cole Bardreau Had a Night!
Cole Bardreau is the 2nd Islander Rookie to convert a penalty shot as a rookie (Tim Connolly 3/21/2000 vs Pittsburgh) and the first to do so for his first NHL goal.

Bardreau is the 7th player in NHL history to score his first goal on a penalty shot; Andrew Miller (3-27-2015 for Edmonton was the last to do so).

Bardreau is also the 375th player in Islander history to score a goal and is one of 20 Islanders since 1979-80 [including teammates Michael Dal Colle (1-17-19 vs NJ) and Devon Toews (1-3-19 vs. Chicago)] whose first NHL game was a game-winner.

Bardreau is the 3rd Cornellian (Cornell Big Red) to score a goal for the Islanders.  Mike Iggulden scored on March 12, 2009 in Montreal; Matt Moulson scored 118 goals for the Isles.

All Those Penalty Shot Goals
The Isles have scored twice on the penalty shot this season (Nick Leddy and Cole Bardreau, both against Ottawa).  It's the first time that the Isles have ever scored two penalty shots against the same opponent in the same season, the first time since 2010-11 (Frans Nielsen – twice) that the Isles have scored twice in the same season, and the earliest that the Isles have scored two penalty shots in any season.

Prior to this season, the Isles had scored only 16 penalty shots in club history and had converted only two penalty shots in the prior seven seasons.

The Streak
10/12: Florida (3-2 Wso)
10/14: St. Louis (3-2 Wot)
10/17: @ Winnipeg (3-1 W)
10/19: @ Columbus (3-2 Wot)

10/27: Philadelphia (5-3 W)
11/1: Tampa Bay (5-2 W)
11/2: @ Buffalo (1-0 W)

A Ten-Beller
This is only the 2nd time in Islander history that they have won at least ten straight games:
15 - 1981-82
10 - 2019-20

It's the third longest stretch between 10-game winning streaks in NHL history, behind Boston and Atlanta/Calgary. (h/t @PR_NHL)

The Isles have scored 31 of their 34 goals (91.2%) at even-strength; the only other team to score 90% of their goals at even-strength during a win streak of 10+ games are the 1978 Atlanta Flames (50 of 55, 90.9%).  (h/t @PR_NHL)

The Isles are the 51st team in NHL history to win ten straight games; teams that have won ten straight have won the following game 26 out of 50 previous times.

First Time in a Ridiculously Long Time
When the Isles last won ten straight:
The Isles were midway through their third Stanley Cup season.
The 10th straight win (on February 11, 1982) was an 8-2 win in Chicago as the Isles broke a 2-2 tie with goals from three different defenseman in a 3:38 span of the second period;
Al Arbour was in the 9th season as Islander coach;
Bill Torrey was in his 10th season as the Isles' general manager;
Lou Lamoriello was in his next- to- last season as the Head Coach of the Providence Friars  general manger, leading Providence to a 19-12-0 season;
Barry Trotz was in his 3rd season with the Regina Pats (he'd finish with 6 goals and 155 penalty minutes);
The Isles had outscored their opponents to this point by a 64-24 margin.
No current Islander player was alive, but Ron Hainsey and Craig Anderson (who both played for Ottawa tonight) were.  Zdeno Chara, Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and Ryan Miller are the only other players who have appeared in an NHL game this season that were alive.

It's Good to be Home(s)
The Isles are 6-2-0 on Coliseum ice, where they have won five straight games.  The Isles will play 28 of their 41 home games this season at the Coliseum.   The Isles are 1-0-0 at Barclays Center.

Up Next
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7th —  PITTSBURGH AT ISLANDERS AT BARCLAYS CENTER
[MSG+ (Islanders pre-game at 6:30pm), 88.7 WRHU-FM, WRCN 103.9FM, ESPN 1050]
The Isles will look for their first 11-game winning streak since 1982 as they entertain the Penguins at Barclays Center.

It will be the first meeting of the two teams since the Isles swept the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs.

The teams split the four regular season meeting last season, with each team earning a shootout win in New York and a regulation win in Pittsburgh.

Three of the next six Islander games are against the Penguins (November 19th in Pittsburgh and November 21st in Brooklyn). Should the Isles continue to win they would attempt to both tie and break the club record against the Penguins.
