The Skinny: Isles 8, Washington 4

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 37
Isles 8, Washington 4
Mathew Barzal scored three goals for his third career hat trick and added two assists for his fourth career 5-point game and four teammates had multi-point games as the Isles rebounded from a pair of losses in Pittsburgh for an 8-4 win over the Washington Capitals before a socially-distanced crowd of 1,400 at Nassau Coliseum.

Jordan Eberle and Josh Bailey each added three points for the Isles, who led by at least two goals for the final 41:07.

With the win, the Isles tie Washington for the East Division point lead. The Capitals have one game in hand and will play it on Friday in New Jersey.  The Penguins beat Boston to create a three-way tie in points; the Isles hold the regulation win tie-breaker with Pittsburgh, who have played the same number of games as the Isles.

The Skinny
The Isles are 4-4-0 since the end of their 9-game win streak (and 12-game point streak) … The Isles defense had three assists (two by Scott Mayfield and one by Andy Greene), giving them 69 – most in the East, and fourth in the NHL… The Isles improve to 3-7-2 against Pittsburgh and Washington (3-0-2 at home and 0-7-0 on the road); they are 20-3-2 vs. their other opponents…The Isles allowed the first goal for the fifth straight game…Nick Leddy played in his 499th game as an Islander; he will become the 7th current Islander to play at least 500 games for the team with his next appearance…The Isles have outscored their opponents 69-36 at home (not including shootout goals)…The Isles' team lead in goals changed several times tonight; Jordan Eberle tied Brock Nelson and Anders Lee for the team lead with 12, then Nelson scored to regain the lead.  Eberle's second period goal created another tie and Mathew Barzal's hat trick goal gave the Isles three players with 13 goals…The Caps have allowed 17 goals in their last three games, including a four-goal period in each of them...Barry Trotz coached his 187th Isles game, matching Terry Simpson for 4th place.

The Injury
Ilya Samsonov left the game after 31 seconds when he collided with TJ Oshie; he returned during the final TV timeout of the period and played the rest of the game.  Had he not returned he would have been the first NHL goaltender since 2001 (Jeff Hackett) to play that little in a start.

The Great 8
The Isles scored eight goals against Washington for the fifth time in club history, tying the club record.
The Isles last scored eight goals on January 14, 2020 vs. Detroit; prior to 2020 they had scored at least eight only twice in the prior 16 years.

The Barzal Story
Mathew Barzal went 3-2-5 and finished +5.  It is the second time in his career that he has had a five-point, +5 game.  Only two other players in Islander history have had multiple games in which they went +5 (or better) while recording at least five points: Bryan Trottier (7 times) and Mike Bossy (3 times).  Barzal is the only Isle to do it even once since Niklas Andersson did so in 1996.
All five of his points were at even-strength; Barzal now leads the East with 27 points at even strength.
Barzal is the fifth Islander in club history with at least four 5-point games, and the first to do so in the 21st century (Trottier and Bossy-15 each, Potvin-5, LaFontaine-4)

First Times in a Long Time
The Isles have scored at least four goals in consecutive home first periods (also March 20 vs Philly) for the first time since December 30, 1980 vs Colorado and January 3, 1981 vs. Hartford.
The Isles scored eight goals against Washington for the first time since November 30, 2001.
Mathew Barzal is the first Islander with a hat trick against the Caps since Bill Guerin did so in DC on October 18, 2007.
It is the first time that the Isles have allowed at least two goals in four consecutive first periods since December 2017.

Hey, Josh Bailey
Josh Bailey improved his career totals to 160-339-499 with a goal and two assists. His goal tied Patrick for 16th place on the team list, the two assists tied and past John Tonelli for 6th place in team history, and his 499 points matches Derek King's 11th place total.  It was Bailey's 13th career game with at least three points and his first since January 21, 2020 against the Rangers.

Varly Streaking
Semyon Varlamov is 8-3-1 in his last twelve decisions, allowing just 30 goals in that span.  Varly has won 15 games this season with a goals against average of 2.26 and save percentage of .919.  Varlamov now has 247 NHL wins.

Sorokin's Shining
Ilya Sorokin is 8-1-0 in his last nine starts.

Sorokin has won five straight at home.  Only one NHL rookie goalie in the last 39 years has won as many as eight straight at home - Semyon Varlamov did that in 2009-10 for Washington.

Home Sweet Home
The Isles have earned points in 16 of their first 17 home games (14-1-2), remaining tied with the 1978-79 team for the most in club history through 17 games:

Most Points at Home Through 17 Games
