Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice, and Tristan Jarry made 18 saves as the Edmonton Oilers handed the Islanders their first shutout defeat of the season, 4-0, before a Halloween matinee crowd of 16,587 at UBS Arena. 

The Islanders were forced to kill six penalties, including an early major penalty to Emil Heineman. Connor McDavid was held to a single assist, but that did extend his NHL-record season-opening assist streak to 14 games.

The Isles continue this three-game homestand on Thursday at 7pm, against the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes.

The Skinny

The Isles went 0-4 on the power play and killed 5-6 Oiler power plays; The Isles’ PK is 25-28 in the last eight games… Matthew Schaefer’s point streak ended at six games; it was only the third time this season he played less than 25 minutes…The Isles were shorthanded six times for the first time since last November 14th at Utah; it is only the third time since 2018 that they have been shorthanded at least six times at home (4/28/22 vs Washington -6 and 10/26/23 vs. Ottawa -8)…Ryan Hugent-Hopkins scored his 90th career power play goal, breaking a tie with Mark Messier for 7th place in club history…Connor Mc David has more points than eight teams have scored goals, and more assists than two of them…The Oilers blanked the Isles for the first time since January 7, 2008, and the first time ever in New York…Tristan Jarry recorded his second consecutive shutout; he has now gone 126:17 without allowing a goal.

The Injury

Edmonton’s Isaac Howard left the game and did not return after a collision with Emil Heineman that led to Heineman receiving a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct.

Matthew Schaefer scored his second goal of the game :33 into overtime as the Isles defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-3, before a sellout crowd of 18,155 at Grand Casino Arena. 

Joel Eriksson-Ek had scored :27 into the game but Schaefer evened it later in the period. The teams traded goals in both the second and third stanzas as well, setting the stage for Schaefer’s heroics.

The Isles head home to begin a three-game homestand, on Saturday at 2pm, against the Edmonton Oilers.

Scott Mayfield played 5:27 of the 6:00 that the Isles were shorthanded… The Isles’ PK is 20-22 in the last seven games… Matthew Schaefer extended his point streak to six games; Adam Pelech scored for the first time in 32 games and later hit the cross-bar, depriving him of his first career two-goal game… Bo Horvat has four of the seven Islander power play goals this season and now has 25 career power play goals for the Isles (and 92 overall); he is the 35th player in club history with 25 power play goals….Schaefer is the fourth Islander defenseman with at least three career OT goals; Thomas Hickey leads the way with five, while Roman Hamrlik and Ryan Pulock also both have three…The Wild scored in the opening minute for the third time this season; it was the seventh time that Ilya Sorokin has allowed an opening minute goal, with the last being scored by Brayden Schenn then with St. Louis, last November…It was the fourth time this season that Ilya Sorokin allowed a goal in the final four minutes of regulation.

The Isles return home to open a three-game homestand as they welcome Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers for a Halloween matinee. 

The Isles have been very successful on home-ice against the Oilers, going 14-1-3 since the start of the century. They are 4-0-1 against Edmonton at UBS Arena.

Seymon Varlamov is a winner again!  Varlamov earned his first NHL win since November 14, 2024, as Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat converted on their shootout attempts to give the Isles a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators, before a sellout crowd of 17,159 at Bridgestone Arena. 

The Isles scored twice in a five-minute span in the first period, including Brayden Schenn’s 300th NHL goal, and then got an early 2nd period goal from Bo Horvat to build a 3-0 lead, but the Preds came back and forced OT on a Ryan O’Reilly goal early in the 3rd period.

The Isles conclude their three-game road trip, all against Central Division opponents, at 8pm ET on Thursday in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Jason Robertson scored twice and eleven Stars had points as Dallas defeated the Islanders 6-3, before a sell-out crowd of 18,532 at American Airlines Center. 

The teams traded goals over the first forty minutes, as the Isles three times offset Stars goals with one of their own; however, the Stars scored all three goals in the third period to earn their fifth straight win and snap the Isles’ five-game point streak (3-0-2).

The Isles continue their three-game road trip, all against Central Division opponents, at 8pm ET on Tuesday in Nashville.

The Skinny

The Isles went 0-2 on the power play and killed 2-3 Star power plays; the Isles have six power play goals this season but are only 1-15 on the road…. • Brayden Schenn scored his 299th NHL goal; his next goal will make him the 249th player in the NHL to reach 300 goals and the 11th to do so while wearing an Islander uniform.

• Ryan Pulock’s assist was his 242nd point (and first of the season); he is one point behind Nick Leddy for 4th place in club history.

• Adam Pelech recorded his 300th NHL penalty minute.
