"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 79
Isles 5, Buffalo 1

Clinched.

The Islanders are headed back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Anthony Beauvillier scored twice (despite being stopped on a penalty shot) and Robin Lehner made 31 saves as the Isles defeated the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 before a sellout crowd of 13,917 at Nassau Coliseum.

The Isles now have 99 points, which is the most through 79 games in the post-Cup era; and they remain three points behind Washington (who beat Tampa Bay). Idle Pittsburgh has 95 points. The Isles and Capitals have three games and Pittsburgh has four games to play.

The Isles' magic number to clinch home-ice is down to five (against Pittsburgh).  It can fall to three on Sunday with a Carolina win over the Penguins.

The Skinny
The Isles are 32-14-3 in their last 49 games…  The Isles have surpassed last season's win and point total; including shootout winners they have scored 31 fewer goals and allowed 96 fewer goals than last year's first 78 games… The Isles have 52 points at home and 47 points on the road; if they can go 1-0-1 in the final two road games they will have their first 50-50 (points at home and on the road since 1981-82) … The Isles have 24 wins at home and 22 wins on the road; it's only the 5th time in franchise history that the Isles have won at least 22 games both at home and on the road (1976-77, 1980-81, 1983-84, 2014-15)… . The Isles finish 9-7-0 in March; they have been above NHL-.500 every month this season… The Isles move 20 games over NHL-.500 for the first time since March 13, 2015...Victor Olofsson, who earned an assist in his NHL debut Wednesday, extended his point streak to two games when he broke Lehner's shutout with 6:32 to play…Jordan Eberle now has four goals in the last four games…Robin Lehner set a new career high with his 24th win...All eighteen Isles were either +1 or +2; the Isles currently have five players who are +20 or better.  The Isles haven't had five players finish a season +20/better since the 1985-86 season, when they had six…Buffalo was 17-7-3 at the end of November but is only 14-30-7 since…The Isles have scored at least five goals in consecutive games for the 2nd time this season [November 13 (Vs. Vancouver) – November 15 (Vs. Rangers)]…The Isles have won 18 of 30 games decided by 3+ goals; they have also won 18 of 30 games decided by 1 goal (18-5-7)…Anders Lee earned his 50th point on the first goal; it was his 22nd assist (tying career high)…Leo Komarov recorded a career-high 19th assist on the final Isle goal…Anthony Beauvillier recorded his 2nd two-goal game of the season; his penalty shot was the first in an Islander game (for either team) this season.

It Happened at the Coliseum ... on March 30th

It's been a long time since the Isles clinched a playoff spot at the Coliseum... 17 years in fact.  (They also never did it at Barclays).

It can happen tonight with a win over Buffalo  (or a Montreal regulation loss in Winnipeg, or both the Isles and Canadiens earning loser points).

The Skinny: Isles 5, Winnipeg 4 - the Magic Number is 2

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 78
Isles 5, Winnipeg 4
The Comeback Kids were at it again.  But this one was different.  The Isles rallied from three separate two-goal deficits and scored two goals in a 33 second span late in the third period as they defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 before a sellout crowd of 15,321 at MTS Place. It is the first game in Islander history that they trailed with two minutes to play and rallied to win in regulation.

Jordan Eberle scored two of the third period goals, including the winner, which came after Casey Cizikas' 20th goal of the season had tied the game at 18:14 of the third period.  Cizikas' goal finally erased a Jets lead in a game that Winnipeg led for 58:01.

The Isles now have 97 points, which is  the most through 78 games in the post-Cup era; idle Pittsburgh has 95 points. The Capitals completed a sweep of Carolina to move to 100 points.  All three teams have four games to play.

The Isles' magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 2.  The Isles can clinch a playoff spot at home on Saturday with a win over Buffalo or a Montreal loss in Winnipeg.

SATURDAY, MARCH 30th –BUFFALO AT ISLANDERS AT NASSAU COLISEUM 7:00PM
[MSG+ (Pre-game at 6:30pm), 88.7 WRHU-FM,WRCN 103.9FM, Radio.com]
The Isles look to clinch a playoff spot as they begin their final homestand with a game against Buffalo.

The teams have split a pair of games this season in Buffalo, with the Isles winning on New Year's Eve 3-1 and losing on February 12th by the same score.

The Isles are 6-2-2 in their last ten games against Buffalo and have beaten in regulation only three times in the last 19 games between the clubs.

This will be the first Sabres game on Long Island since April 4, 2015 when Jaroslav Halak blanked Buffalo 3-0; it was the Isles' final regular season win at the Coliseum for nearly 44 months.

It has been 17 years since the Isles have clinched a playoff spot with a win on home ice (5-4 vs Washington on April 6, 2002) and 29 years since the Isles clinched a playoff spot in March (March 31, 1990 – Isles beat Philly and Uwe Krupp's OT goal for Buffalo over Pittsburgh knocked Isles into playoffs); both of those streaks could end on Saturday.

The Skinny on the Metro/Wild Card Playoff Race - Magic Number still 5

The Isles lost in Columbus while Montreal beat Florida and Washington beat Carolina.  The most positive part of the evening: no 3-point games)

Metro/Wild Card Playoff Watch
1. Caps 98 points/77 games/41 ROW (Thursday at Carolina, Saturday at Tampa Bay)
2. Penguins 95 points/77 games/40 ROW (Friday vs. Nashville, Sunday vs. Carolina)
3. Isles 95 points/77 games/40 ROW (Thursday at Winnipeg, Saturday vs. Buffalo)

Wild Card Race
WC1. Hurricanes 91 points/76 games/40 ROW (Thursday vs. Washington, Saturday vs. Philadelphia)
WC2. Canadiens 90 points/77 games/39 ROW (Thursday at Columbus, Saturday at Winnipeg)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WC3. Blue Jackets 88 points/76 games/41 ROW (Thursday vs. Montreal, Saturday at Nashville)

Magic Numbers:
The Isles Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot remains 5 as the Isles still have 95 points. While either Montreal or Columbus could still get to 100 points by winning all their remaining games, they play each other on Thursday, so one team is guaranteed to finish with 99 or fewer.

There are only 6 unique results for Thursday -- Isles will earn 0, 1, or 2 points  while the MTL/CBJ will either end in regulation or not.

The Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot after Thursday's Games will be:
2: If Isles win in any manner and MTL/CBJ game ends in regulation

3: If Isles win in any manner and MTL/CBJ game is tied after 60 minutes
                                               OR
If Isles lose in OT/SO and MTL/CBJ game ends in regulation

4: If Isles lose in regulation and MTL/CBJ ends in regulation
                                                OR
If Isles lose in OT/SO and MTL/CBJ game is tied after 60 minutes

5: If Isles lose in regulation and MTL/CBJ game is tied after 60 minutes

(The Magic Number after Thursday's game will be against whichever team loses the MTL/CBJ game)

Looking Ahead to Saturday
Saturday will be a potential clinch date for the Isles UNLESS the Isles lose to Winnipeg in regulation while MTL/CBJ is tied after regulation.

Tie Breakers:
Head-to-Head
Isles will need a regulation win in Washington on April 6th to tie this tie-breaker.  Isles have tied season series with Pittsburgh and won season series from Carolina.

Winnipeg defeated the Isles at Barclays Center back on December 4th by a 3-1 score; however, the Isles have played well in Manitoba since the Jets rejoined the NHL.  The Isles are 7-1-1 in nine trips, losing only on December 29, 2017.

The Isles could reduce their magic number to two if they win this game and the Columbus/Montreal game ends in regulation.

The Skinny on the Metro Playoff Race -- MAGIC NUMBER IS 5

The Isles' win Sunday afternoon lowered the magic number to 6.  Montreal's OT Loss Sunday night lowered it to 5.

Here's why:  Both Montreal and Columbus would reach 100 points if they won all of their remaining games.  However, Montreal plays Columbus on Thursday, so one or the other is guaranteed to finish with no more than 99.

The Isles have 95 already, making the magic number 5  (99 - 95 +1 = 5)

Metro/Wild Card Playoff Watch

It could go as low as 1(with an Isles regulation win in Columbus and a Montreal regulation loss to Florida) on Tuesday.

The Skinny: Isles 2, Arizona 0

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 76
Isles 2, Arizona 0
Robin Lehner made 26 saves for his 5th shutout of the season and the Isles got an early goal from Jordan Eberle and a late goal by Brock Nelson as they defeated the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 before a sellout crowd of 13,917 at Nassau Coliseum.

The victor gives the Isles a sweep in the final set of back-to-backs this season; the Isles went 11-1-1 in the back-end games.

The win gives the Isles 95 points, which is the most through 76 games in the post-Cup era; It also keeps the Isles within one point of Washington (who defeated Philadelphia 3-1); idle Pittsburgh has 93 points  and will visit Madison Square Garden on Monday.  All three teams have six games to play.

The Isles' magic number to clinch a playoff spot is now 5; they could clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday (with a regulation win) in Columbus if the Blue Jackets lose to regulation to Vancouver Sunday night.
