Peyton Krebs broke a 2-2 tie with 3:01 to play, and a Bo Byram empty-netter 78 seconds later turned out to be the winner as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Islanders, 4-3, before a sellout crowd of 19,070 at KeyBank Center.
The teams traded power play goals over the first two periods, and when Anders Lee re-tied the game with 6:21 to play but Krebs' goal sent the Isles to a second straight defeat. Matthew Schaefer assisted on the Lee goal to set a club rookie defensemen record with his 57th point.
The Isles remain in third place in the Metro Division and hope to still be there when they host Philadelphia on Friday.

The Shutout Leader
Sorokin not only leads the NHL in shutouts this season; his 29 career shutouts are the most by an NHL goalie since Sorokin debuted in 2020-21; Connor Hellebuyck has 25 and Igor Shesterkin has 22 in that span.
Sorokin has tied the club record with his seven shutouts (Varlamov, Resch); he is the first Islander goalie to do so twice. Sergei Bobrovsky is the only other goalie who has appeared in a game this season to have two seasons with at least seven shutouts.
