Pittsburgh 5, Isles 2
Sidney Crosby scored twice, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang each had three assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins built a 5-0 lead and defeated the Islanders 5-2  before a crowd of 18,665 at CONSOL Energy Center. 
Despite the loss, the Isles' first in regulation in 10 divisional games this season (7-1-2), the Isles remain 2nd in the Metropolitan Division, one point ahead of the Rangers.

The Skinny:
Sidney Crosby is 29-62-91 in 51 games vs. the Isles while Evgeni Malkin is 23-40-63 in 49 games…John Tavares regained the team lead in goals with 15, one more than Frans Nielsen …Nick Leddy recorded a point for the 4th straight game; his late goal was his first in 50 games, dating back to last March in Florida...Nikolay Kulemin's goal streak ended at 3… Thomas Greiss allowed 4 goals for the first time as an Islander; Christopher Gibson made his NHL debut following Matt Cullen's goal and began the 50th player to appear in a game as an Islander goaltender…Kyle Okposo set a career high with 10 shots on goal, including 8 in the 3rd period.  He is the first Islander since Bill Guerin (10-25-08 vs. Carolina) to record 10 shots in a game…Pittsburgh is 4-1-1 in their last 6; their PP is 9-23 in their last 7…The Isles allowed three goals in a period for the 4th time this season (0-4-0)…It was the Penguins' 397th consecutive home sellout, including playoffs...The Isles are 8-11-1 over the last two seasons in games in which they are missing Johnny Boychuk, Travis Hamonic or Nick Leddy.

The Injury:
Cal Clutterbuck suffered an upper body injury in the first period, had a short shift in the 2nd period and then did not return.  Clutterbuck has missed only one game this season.

First Times in a Long Time
The Isles have allowed 43+ shots in consecutive games for the first time since 1/9-1/11/2011 (45 to Chicago, 51 to Vancouver).   They will look to avoid doing it in three consecutive days for the first time since 1990 on Sunday.
Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang each had three assists, marking the first time in exactly six years (1/2/2010 vs. Atlanta) that teammates each had three helpers vs. the Islanders. Ilya Kovalchuk and Toby Enstrom turned the trick for the Thrashers, but the Isles prevailed 6-5 in a shootout.

Out With the Old, In With the New
This was the third game of a stretch in which the Isles will play five games in eight days which will take the calendar into 2016. The Isles are 2-2-0 in this stretch.

It's only the 2nd time in the last 5 seasons (2/16/15 vs NYR) that both teams have had at least 40 shots in an Islander game.

The Islanders are 21-13-5 overall; 12-6-2 at home and 9-7-3 on the road. 
 
Pittsburgh is 19-15-4 overall; 10-7-3 at home and 9-8-1 on the road.  

By Division
The Isles are 7-1-2 in Division games and are 14-12-3 in games against other divisions. They are 3-8-2 vs. the Atlantic Division, 5-2-1 vs. Central Division, and 6-2-0 vs. the Pacific Division. 
The Isles finished last season 21-6-3 against the Met and 26-22-4 against other Divisions. 

In the Nets
Thomas Greiss made 22 saves before being pulled in the second period; he is now 11-6-2 on the season and 2-1-0 in his career against Pittsburgh.  Christopher Gibson made 16 saves in the final 29:03
Marc-Andre Fleury made 38 saves as he improves to 14-10-2 on the season and 21-9-4 in his career against the Isles.  It was Fleury's first game since December 14th.

Power Plays
The Islanders were 0-1 on the power play, allowing a shorthanded goal while Pittsburgh was 2-4.
The Isles are 11-3-3 when they score at least one power play goal and 10-10-2 when they do not.  The Isles are 6-6-1 when they allow at least one power play goal and 15-7-4 when they do not. 

Three is a Magic Number
The Isles are 17-2-0 when they score at least three goals (including shootout winners) and are 4-11-5 when they do not.  The Isles were 40-8-4 when they scored at least three goals (including SO winners) last season.

The Isles are 9-5-5 in games decided by a single goal including 4-5-0 in regulation. They are 2-3 in games decided in overtime and are 3-2 in shootouts.  The Isles are 4-3 in games in which an empty-net goal turns a 1 goal game into a 2-goal game.

Second to The One
Jack Capuano is the 2nd winningest coach in Islander history. Capuano is 186-161-51 behind the Islander bench and will coach his 400th game on January 7th vs Washington. Among the 9 New York area teams, only the Giants' Tom Coughlin and the Yankees' Joe Girardi have led their respective teams longer than Capuano.

Pittsburgh leads the season series 1 game to 0 and 2 points to 0.  This was their only meeting in the Isles' first 64 games; the teams will next meet on March 8th in Brooklyn.
The Penguin win ends an Islander 4-game winning streak over Pittsburgh; it was the first time they have done that since February 1 – December 23, 1986, when they won five straight.

On The Farm
Joe Whitney scored 38 seconds into overtime to give Bridgeport a 4-3 OT victory over Rochester on Saturday. Bridgeport is 19-13-2-1 and they will host Hershey on Sunday to conclude a 3-game in 3-day weekend.

The Isles return home to begin a stretch of 8 out of 10 games at Barclays Center as they entertain the Dallas Stars.
 
It's the first of two meetings with Dallas.  The Isles are 3-0-1 over the last 4 games vs. Dallas, outscoring the Stars by a 20-13 margin.  In the Coliseum matchup last season, Frans Nielsen completed a hat trick into an empty net as the Isles prevailed by a 7-5 score.
