deHaan to Sound Tigers...or Islanders

...but not back to Jr.

http://www.yourottawaregion.com/sports/article/1049602--dehaan-goes-pro

the story goes on to note that his younger brother, Evan, was a higher draft pick in the Jr draft than Calvin was.

Isles acquire Rolston; deal Hunter to Devils

The Isles have acquired winger Brian Rolston from New Jersey in a 1:1 trade for Trent Hunter.  (Earlier reports had also said that a draft pick was included but that was inaccurate.)

The team release is here: http://islanders.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=585408&navid=DL|NYI|home

Rolston, 38, becomes the oldest player on the team -- his cap hit is $5,062,500 for the season.  He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next July 1.  He is just 3 1/2 years younger than the General Manager who acquired him -- today is Garth Snow's 42nd birthday. Rolston is four years older than Marty Reasoner (the oldest other skater on the roster; goalie Evgeny Nabokov turned 36 earlier this week).

Rolston had three consecutive 30+ goal seasons for the Wild, but scored only 49 goals for New Jersey over the past three seasons.  After being scratched and waived early in the season by New Jersey, Rolston who had only two goals and three assists in 21 games by New Year's rebounded to finish with 14 goals and 20 assists.

Hunter, on the other hand, missed the season's final 65 games after scoring a goal and an assist vs Columbus on November 24th.  It was his 99th goal as an Islander, leaving him one shy of being the 25th player in team history to score 100 goals.

Hunter departs the Islanders as the active career leader in most offensive categories.  With Hunter's departure, Blake Comeau now has played the most games for the Islanders (245); Matt Moulson has the most goals (61); Frans Nielsen has the most assists (83) while John Tavares has the most points (121) and power play goals (20).

Hunter, 31, has two seasons remaining on his 5 year/ $10 million contract.

1 in 14 Long Islanders without work

From a Newsday blog:

<<Long Island jobless rate up to 7.1%

Long Island's unemployment rate rose to 7.1 percent in June from 6.7 percent in May, the New York State Labor Department reported Tuesday afternoon. The current rate matches the jobless rate in June 2010.

Though plagued with high unemployment rates, the Island is still faring better than the nation, which has a 9.2 percent jobless rate, and New York State, which has an 8 percent rate.

The number of employed workers on Long Island fell to 1.374 million in June from 1.395 million the year earlier.

As reported last week, the Long Island economy had 6,800 fewer jobs in June, the largest year-over-year loss in 16 months.

Anyone have an idea on a project that could get some of these people back to work?  Bueller? anyone? #VoteYesAug1

Isles prospects Lee and Nelson picked as Key Returnees on #2 and #3 teams in NCAA

...at least according to Inside College Hockey.

Notre Dame (Lee) is #2 while North Dakota (Nelson) is #3.

Despite losing goalie Keith Kinkaid to the Devils, Union College (Schenectady) is picked as the #6 team in the (very early) pre-season rankings.

Au revoir, Doc

Emmy winner Doc Emrick has left the Devils to concentrate solely on his national work.

He announced the departure in a heartfelt letter on the Devils' website:
http://devils.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=569804

Doc's departure ends a 16 year run in which Doc, Howie and Sam served as their respective team's TV play-by-play voice.

His replacement will have huge shoes to fill in "New Joisey".

The Isles lease ...

...has one unusual typo that I don't think has been pointed out.

Sec 4m  notes that the "guaranteed maximum project management agreements... do not exceed Three Hundred Seventy Five and No/100 Dollars."    (Luckily, the parenthetical adds the zeroes...all 6 of them  ($375,000,000).
The complete (proposed) lease is here:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/58537475/Nassau-Coliseum-New-Lease-Islanders and is executed by Arenaco SPE LLC on behalf of the proposed tenant.

Isles tweet From Snow:

#Isles GM Garth Snow just gave exclusive info to the Isles twitter account about
his future signing plans.

Snow said, "We do have a young group with a few veteran leaders on the blue
line. We'll look to add another defenseman.....I don't think it's going to be
through free agency, but we'll see where that takes us. We did it last summer
with a trade for (James) Wisniewski and we'll look along those lines."

Follow the team's official site: @NYIslanders and of course, me, @ehornick
