Isles: 1 appearance on National TV

If the NHL goes through with its lockout, it might lock the Isles out of its only appearance on (US) National TV.

The only NBCSN game is on Monday, October 22nd (a home game with Florida).  I would assume it's an exclusive, meaning no local MSG+ telecast, because it is the only game in its time frame.  (A Vancouver-Detroit game is starting at 6pm that night).

The Islanders are not currently scheduled to appear on NBC or on NHL-Network, at least based on the schedules released today.

Labor yuk

Steve Zipay has an outline here:  http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blue-notes-1.811976/the-revised-nhl-labor-offer-parameters-1.3934226

Based on capgeek, 16 of the 30 teams are currently above the $58m proposed cap. The Rangers are the last of those 16 teams; the Isles are currently 29th in cap-commitments, but only if you count Lubomir Visnovsky.  If Visnovsky's rights revert to the Ducks, there would then be 17 teams above the cap.

Of course, changes to what is considered to be part of the cap could be part of the agreement that they will hopefully find in the next 17 days.

Tick, tick, tick.

Has it been 20 years

This season marks the 20th anniversary of a memorable 1992-93 season, not only for the Isles but throughout the NHL.

It's told in a soon-to-be-released book  "A Season in Time: Super Mario, Killer, St. Patrick, the Great One, and the Unforgettable 1992-93 NHL Season"

Visnovsky crashes car in auto race

From the "Ducks Daily" blog:

Lubomir Visnovsky Crashes During Auto Race in Slovakia

by Ducks
The offseason continues to be interesting for Lubomir Visnovsky. After being traded to the New York Islanders on the first day of the NHL Entry Draft, Lubo filed a grievance against the trade to try and remain with the Anaheim Ducks. Even though it was probably more like he really didn't want to play in Long Island.

Earlier today, Lubo was participating in a race at the Automotodrom Slovakia Ring motor circuit and wound up crashing his Ferrari head on into a barrier. The entire front end of the car was destroyed. Apparently, Lubo was coming out of a turn and lost control of his car at high speed and hit a barrier head on.

Lubo was able to walk away from the incident without any serious injuries. I'm not a big fan of any kind of motor sports but we've all seen footage and pictures of some pretty horrific accidents at racetracks. We all should know how dangerous they can be. Motor sports crashes have resulted in hundreds of deaths of drivers and even spectators. So, Lubo should consider himself lucky and maybe stick to hockey for the lockout that continues to look inevitable.

NHL Salaries

Chris Botta has a piece for SBD here: http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2012/08/13/Leagues-and-Governing-Bodies/NHL-pay.aspx on salaries for the leading NHL executives.

Commissioner Gary Bettman's compensation is listed as $7,983,753 for the year ending 6/30/11.

Assuming he has received no raise since then, his compensation would be higher than all but 15 NHLers NEXT season.

Thanks, cap geek.

The King on CBA Offensive

Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist is paid to stop shots.  This afternoon, via twitter, he took a few of his own.

Henrik Lundqvist ‏@HLundqvist30  (three separate tweets over a period of a couple of hours.)

Lately I've been surprising myself with some weird actions.
I was taking my dog for a walk, left the apt with just the leash..Who does that?

Reasons for my behavior, still adjusting to parenthood..
Or it could be Gary Bettman's comments on shutting down the league.. #Alotonmymind

The @NHL says they won't play past Sept 15th under current deal. Apparently they don't like the deal they
designed. #CBA #nhlpa2012

Lundqvist also retweeted union-mate, and former teammate Brandon Prust's comment:

Brandon Prust ‏@BrandonPrust8
Disappointed the League is talking about a lockout before we even give our @NHLPA counterproposal. #theplayers

Both the Rangers and the Islanders are SCHEDULED to open the NHL season nine weeks from tonight.
