John Tavares scored the winning goal with 3:36 to play as the Isles completed a rally from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 victory over the defending Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning before a crowd of 19,092 at Amalie Arena in Tampa. The Isles are 2-0-1 in their last 3 games as they once again are four games over NHL .500, matching a season high.

The Skinny:

The Penalty Shot
Thomas Greiss stopped Lightning Captain Steven Stamkos on a penalty shot at 10:26 of the 2nd period; Stamkos was also stopped by Roberto Luongo on a penalty shot earlier this month.  It was the 21st penalty shot in the NHL this season and only four goals have been scored.  John Tavares and Mikhail Grabovski were stopped earlier this season.  This was the first penalty shot against the Isles this season.
All-time Islander goalies have stopped 36 of 50 opponent penalty shots, including eight straight. The last opponent to score vs. the Islanders was Los Angeles' Dustin Brown, in the final game Scott Gordon served as head coach.

It's the first time that the Isles have scored two power play goals in a game since October 12th vs Winnipeg and the first time that they have done so on the road since January 4th in Edmonton.

The Isles power play had converted only once in the prior 8 games [1-25 (4.0%)] after opening the season 9-36 (25%).  The Isles killed all 5 opponent power plays in their two-game Florida trip; it's the first time since October 15- November 1 (9 games) that the Isles killed all opposing power plays in consecutive games.
The Isles are 6-2-2 when they score at least one power play goal and 5-7-2 when they do not.  The Isles are 5-5-1 when they allow at least one power play goal and 7-3-3 when they do not. 

Three is a Magic Number

Ryan Strome and Josh Bailey scored 3:03 apart in the third period to tie the game but the Florida Panthers scored on all five of their shootout attempts as they defeated the Islanders before a crowd of 14,598 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL.  The Isles are 0-2 in shootouts this season and have lost a franchise-record 7 straight shootouts, dating back to last season.

It's the first time in NHL shootout history that there have been 9 consecutive goals…It's the first time a shootout has started with 9 consecutive goals…It's also the first time only one shooter has not scored in a shootout of at least 5 rounds…Frans Nielsen's goal was his 40th career shootout goal, tying Jonathan Toews for the all-time NHL record.…The Isles tied the club record with 4 goals in a shootout, set on April 15, 2006 in Pittsburgh and tied on January 16, 2010 vs. Buffalo (both 4-3 wins) and again on March 27, 2014 in Tampa (5-4 in 13 rounds) .  The 5 shootout goals allowed tie that 2014 game for the most the Isles have ever allowed.

The Isles did not score in the first period for the first time in eight games. Kyle Okposo's point streak ended at six games (1-7-8) while John Tavares' point streak ended at 4…The Isles have scored at least one third period goal in six straight games, outscoring their opponents 11-5… The Isles' 26 points through 23 games is their second-highest point total at this stage of the season in the last 8 years (32 points last season)… Jaroslav Halak (44-21-6) remained tied with Garth Snow (44-52-13) for 11th place on the Isles' all-time goalie win list… Ryan Strome scored in his return from Bridgeport; his only other NHL goal was vs. Winnipeg on October 12th…Josh Bailey's tying goal was his first since October 23rd… Isles are 0-11-2 in last 13 games (dating back to last March 9th) when trailing after two periods… Roberto Luongo played his 882nd NHL game, passing John Vanbiesbrouck for 8th place on the all-time goaltender list.  He recorded his 408th win, passing Glenn Hall 8th place on that list…Marek Zidlicky, the oldest defenseman in Islander history, recorded two assists for his first points since November 3rd and his first multi-point game as an Islander…Jaromir Jagr's assist was his 93rd assist and 154th point against the Isles (61-93-154).  He is the all-time leader against the Isles in all three categories.

Four Islander defensemen played at least 24:14.  It's the first time since January 19, 2013 that four Isles have played at least that much.
