Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin scored 2:05 apart midway through the third period and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for his 3rd shutout of the season as the Islanders blanked the Rangers 2-0 at Madison Square Garden.

Varlamov has not allowed a goal in 120 minutes against the Rangers this season; it is the first time the Isles have blanked the Rangers twice in a single season.  It was his 30th regular season shutout (and 5th as an Islander).

Barry Trotz recorded his 850th win as an NHL head coach, breaking a tie with Ken Hitchcock for 3rd play on the all-time list.

The Skinny        

The Isles have won two straight and now points in four straight (2-0-2).…Mathew Barzal has points on twelve of the team's 25 goals this season, including nine of 18 at even-strength; Barzal also now has 15 assists (and five goals) in 15 games against the Rangers. He has an assist in six straight games overall; only Conor McDavid (8), Mitch Marner (8) and Charlie McAvoy (7) have longer active streaks…All three members of the fourth line have recorded a goal over the last two games and all three have points in each of the last two games…It is the first time since Opening Night that the road team won an Islander game (and snapped an 0-4-2 road stretch for the Isles); the nine consecutive wins by a home team matches the Islander club record…The Isles have three shutouts in their first 11 games for the first time since 1998-99 (all by Tommy Salo).. On the Farm

Bridgeport dropped a 5-2 decision to Hartford on Sunday to fall to 0-2-0 on the season.  They will next play in Marlborough, MA against Providence on Sunday afternoon.  All 24 of their games will be played against either Providence or Hartford.

Anders Lee broke a 3-3 tie with a late power play goal as the Isles rallied from a third period deficit for a 4-3 regulation win at the Coliseum.  The Isles are 3-0-0 at the Coliseum, marking the first time since the 2003-04 season that they have opened the home campaign with three straight wins. 

Jordan Eberle scored a pair of first period goals for the Isles, with Michael Dal Colle earning assists on both goals; it was the first multi-point game of Dal Colle' career.

It was a milestone win for both Barry Trotz (his 849th, tying Ken Hitchcock for 3rd all-time) and for Semyon Varlamov (coming in his 500th NHL game).

The win snaps a five-game losing streak (0-3-2) and creates a three-game point streak (1-0-2)… Jordan Eberle has scored four goals in the three Coliseum games this year.…Mathew Barzal has points on eleven of the team's 23 goals this season and leads the Isles in assists (7);  Noah Dobson's assist gave him the team-lead in points among defensemen (6)…Cal Clutterbuck's tying goal was his first in 20 games… The Penguins have not had a 2-goal lead or led through two periods in any game this season…Three of Anders Lee's four goals have come on the power play; he scored just twice with the extra man last season.  Lee now has 53 career power play goals (9th in Isles history)…Pierre-Olivier Joseph's goal was his 1st in the NHL; he is the 25th player to score his first NHL goal this season (and the only one to do so against the Isles)…Brock Nelson's assist was his 299th point; only 21 others have reached 300 points as an Islander.  Bryan Rust finished with 8 shots on goal and 15 shot attempts...Semyon Varlamov is the 13th currently-active NHL goaltender to appear in 500 games.

On the Farm

Bridgeport opened their 24-game schedule with a 4-1 loss to Providence on Friday.  They will next play in Hartford on Sunday afternoon.  All 24 of their games will be played against either Providence or Hartford.

After Monday's game, the teams will not play again until April 9th, when they begin a stretch of five games in 23 days against each other.

Let's Go Home! Kevin Hayes scored a power play goal 4:22 into overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Isles 4-3 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  The Isles complete their road trip with an 0-3-2 record.

For the second night in a row, the Isles rallied from a 2-goal deficit only to lose in overtime. The Flyers defeated the Isles three times in overtime during the 2020 playoffs and have now add two wins in a row over the Isles to open the 2020-21 campaign.

All three Flyer goals in regulation were scored by Joel Farabee, as he became the first Flyer to record a hat trick against the Isles since Vincent Lecavalier (10-26-2013).

Scott Laughton scored 3:16 into overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Isles 3-2 at  Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  The Isles are 0-3-1 on their road trip, with one game to play in Philadelphia on Sunday.

The Flyers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Isles knotted the game with a pair of goals 4:15 apart in the second stanza.  The Isles out-shot Philadelphia 21-8 in the final 40 minutes of regulation but could not find a third goal.

Conor Sheary scored a pair of goals 73 seconds apart to key a five-goal second period as the Washington Capitals extended their season-opening point streak to a club-record eight games (5-0-3) with a come-from behind 6-3 win over the Isles at Capital One Arena in Washington. 

Oliver Wahlstrom's first NHL goal was followed eighteen seconds later by Casey Cizikas' first goal in the regular season since last January 18th as the Isles grabbed a 2-0 lead.  Anders Lee scored his 2nd power play goal of the season (matching last season's total) to make it 3-0 before the Capitals took over the game.

The Skinny        

The Isles have lost four straight road games, all in regulation…Mathew Barzal has points on seven of the team's 14 goals this season…John Carlson extended his point streak to five games… Vitek Vanacek is the second goalie in Caps history to earn points in his first six games…Oliver Wahlstrom is the 379th player in Isles history to score a goal; he and Dobson are the first pair of Islanders to be born in the 2000s to record points in the same period… This was the second time under Trotz that the Isles have allowed five goals in a period (also 3rd period by Washington on January 18, 2020)…Through seven games, the Isles have scored nine goals in the first period, but only five goals in the second and third periods combined…The Isles have been outscored 9-2 in the second period…John Carlson extended his assist streak to five games…Mathew Barzal was given a misconduct penalty late in the game; it is the first misconduct penalty he has been assessed in his NHL career…The Caps have scored 30 goals on only 221 shots this season (13.6%), despite missing Alex Ovechkin for four games…The Isles led for 21:21,nearly matching the 25:54 Washington had trailed in their first seven games…Noah Dobson has played over 20 minutes in four of the first seven games…JG Pageau earned an assist on Wahlstrom's goal; it was Pageau's first regular season point vs the Caps. 

Milestone Men

Anders Lee appeared in his 500th NHL game (all for the Isles), while Josh Bailey played in his 872nd game, matching Clark Gillies for 4th place on the all-time club list.

This marked the first time since April 6, 1986 that the Isles dressed five skaters with 500 games of Islander experience.  That game, which was the final game of Arbour's first tenure, was also the final Islander regular season game for both Clark Gillies and Bob Bourne.  Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy all dressed for the Isles that night (as did Billy Smith in goal).

Cal Clutterbuck (485 Isles games) and Nick Leddy (469 Isles games) could join this group later in the season.

Footnote to History

Semyon Varlamov, who saw his season GAA rise from 0.92 to 1.93 in the second period did not face a shot on goal in the third period .  Tom Wilson's empty-net goal prevented the Isles from going the entire session without allowing a shot for the first time in their 11,217 period history.  Rather they tied the club record of 1, done most recently on January 11, 2017.

This was the 39th time in club history that the Isles allowed five goals in a period (0-38-1).

Justin Schultz scored the winning goal with under 27 seconds to play as the Washington Capitals extended their season-opening point streak to seven games (4-0-3) with a 3-2 win over the Isles 2-0 at Capital One Arena in Washington. 

Mathew Barzal had a goal and an assist for the Isles, who suffered their first loss at Capital One Arena under Barry Trotz.

The Isles have allowed only eight goals this season; it is the first time in 44 years they have allowed eight or fewer goals through five games…Leo Komarov replaced Anthony Beauvillier (IR) in the lineup; Beauvillier had played 148 consecutive games.…That was only the second time this season that both teams scored in an Islander game and the first time that each team scored multiple goals…The game also features the first two lead changes of the season….The Isles have lost three straight road games, all in regulation…Mathew Barzal has points on six of the team's 11 goals this season; his 2nd period goal was only the second scored by the Isles this season…Justin Schultz' winning goal was only the second allowed by the Isles in the third period this season…John Carlson extended his point streak to four games...The Capitals have matched their club record by earning points in the first seven games of the season (4-0-3 this season; 7-0-0 in 2011-12); Vitek Vanacek is the second goalie in Caps history to earn points in his first five games.

Jack Hughes and Pavel Zacha scored goals two minutes apart late in the first period and Scott Wedgewood made 28 saves for his first NHL shutout since 2017 as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Isles 2-0 at Prudential Center in Newark.

Ilya Sorokin was in goal for the Isles and for the second straight game the Isles were held without a goal.

The Skinny        

The Isles have allowed only eight goals this season; it is the first time in 44 years they have allowed eight or fewer goals through five games…Michael Dal Colle replaced Kieffer Bellows in the lineup. The Isles had dressed the same 18 skaters in the first four games, matching a club record to start the season (last done in 2015-16)…New Jersey rookie Ty Smith assisted on both Devil goal to extend his career-starting point streak to five games; he is the 6th defenseman in NHL history to do so… It was the first time since 2013 that the Devils had shutout the Isles.

Isles History Lesson

• Brock Nelson became the sixth Islander to dress for 250 consecutive games while Ryan Pulock became the third Islander defenseman to play 200 consecutive games. 

• Ilya Sorokin is the first Islander goalie to lose his first two starts without the Isles scoring a single goal.

Lots of Blanks

This is only the 3rd time in Islander history that there have been four shutouts in a stretch of five games or fewer:

• December 23-29, 2007 - Isles went 2-2-0, all by shutout.

• March 19-26, 2019- Isles went 2-3-0, losing three of the four shutouts.

• January 14-24, 2021 – Isles went 3-2-0, winning two of the four shutouts.

Doing the Lindy

Lindy Ruff earned his 739th win as an NHL head coach.  If that total of wins sounds familiar it is because that was the total wins Al Arbour earned for the Isles in his first 1,499 games. He then earned his 740th Islander win in the famed "Arbour 1500" game in 2007.

Circle Stars

The Isles have won a majority of face-offs in each of the first five games.  It is the first time since face-offs have been officially tracked (1997-98) that the Isles have done this.  

The Islanders have won 58.0% of the draws through the five games.  They have not won more than 50.1% of the draws since 2007-08.

Since face-offs were tracked in the NHL, the Islander club record for consecutive games winning the majority of face-offs is 8, set in October-November 2006.

The Injury

Anthony Beauvillier left the game with an apparent injury in the second period; he did not return.

The Isles head to the nation's capital for the first time since eliminating the Capitals in The Bubble last summer.

It is the first of a pair of games in DC as the teams will also meet on Thursday.  

This will be the fifth game in Washington for Barry Trotz since he joined the Islanders; the Isles have won all four previous games, matching the club record for consecutive road wins against the Caps.    

The Caps are now coached by former Islander coach Peter Laviolette.  Like Trotz, Laviolette also had a long run as coach in Nashville.  Laviolette will be missing several players including Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Samsonov due to COVID protocols.

Brendan Burke and AJ Mleczko will have the call of the game, which will air nationally except in the Washington-area.
