Isles 4, Columbus 3 (OT)

On Hockey Fights Cancer Night, it was the son of an Islander who passed away from cancer that became the hero. Zach Parise scored his 9th career overtime goal 39 seconds into the extra session as the Islanders overcame three one-goal deficits to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena. 

After a scoreless first period, the Jackets scored twice in the middle session, only to have a goal from Brock Nelson (part of his career-high ten shots) even the score.  Marcus Bjork, in his NHL debut, scored 9:38 into the third period but Scott Mayfield forced overtime was his fourth goal of the season.

The Isles head on the road for four games, crossing the US-Canadian border four times in the process, beginning on Monday in Ottawa.

The Skinny             

The Isles did not reach ten wins last season until January 1st (10-12-6)...Scott Mayfield scored just three times last season; his career high of 5 was set in 2019-20…Sebastian Aho recorded his first multi-assist game…Mathew Barzal has twelve assists in the last eleven games (0-12-12); he is the first Islander since Pierre Turgeon (1992-93) to have at least sixteen assists in the first sixteen games. … The Isles have outscored their opponents 26-14 in the third period with five of those 22 goals being empty netters … The Isles lead the NHL with 26 third period goals; they have scored 27 goals in the 1st period, 2nd period, and overtime combined… The Isles have allowed eight power play goals in the last eight games after being perfect on the penalty kill in the first eight games this season… Matt Martin played in his 700th game for the Isles…Each of the last two Isles games have been tied after two periods; none of the first 14 were tied through 40 minutes…The Isles are 2-0 in overtime and have scored on both of their shots on goal…The Isles have now earned six comeback wins, including four where they trailed in the third period.

First Times in a Really Long Time

Brock Nelson is the first Islander since John Tavares (1-22-2017 vs. Philadelphia) to have ten shots on goal in the game.  Nobody has had more since Wendel Clark had 11 on December 21, 1995, in Dallas. 

Marcus Bjork is the first opponent to score against the Isles in his NHL debut since Justin Holl did so for Toronto on January 31, 2018. 

One for the History Books

Zach Parise is the oldest player in club history to score in overtime.  Zach (38 years, 107 days) is about nine months older than Lubomir Visnovsky was when he scored in overtime on February 27, 2014.

Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 4-3-0 this season,  despite allowing just 12 goals in the seven games (1.86 GAA, .945 save percentage). The Isles have scored only two goals in his three home losses this year and only ten goals in his eight career regulation losses at UBS.

Among goalies who have played at least twelve home games over the last two seasons, Sorokin has the second-highest save percentage (.933) and the third-lowest goals against average (2.08). 

Zach Attack 

Zach Parise's overtime tally was his 413th career goal, good for 9th among actives.  Zach is now tied with Garry Unger and Islander Assistant Coach John MacLean for 92nd place.  Tony Amonte is 91st with 416 goals.

It was Parise's ninth career overtime goal but only his second since leaving the Devils  a decade ago.

Travis Boyd broke a scoreless tie with a power play goal 60 seconds into the third period and Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves for his second career shutout as the Arizona Coyotes blanked the Isles 2-0 before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena. 

Boyd's goal, the first by a Coyote in 161:00 of career play against Ilya Sorokin, was the only one that beat the Islander netminder; Jack McBain added a last-minute empty netter to cement the Islanders' first loss to a Western Conference opponent after six straight victories in inter-conference games.

The Isles conclude the brief home stand as they host Columbus on Saturday.

The Isles did not earn their ninth win of the season last season until December 30th (9-12-6)...Mathew Barzal has eleven assists in the last ten games (0-11-11) … Despite being outscored 2-0 tonight, the Isles have outscored their opponents 25-13 in the third period with five of those 22 goals being empty netters … The Isles still lead the NHL with 25 third period goals; they have scored 24 goals in the 1st period, 2nd period, and overtime combined…Arizona has won four straight road games and three straight overall…This was the third game of the Coyotes' 14-game road trip, matching the NHL record set by Vancouver in 2010... The Isles have allowed seven power play goals in the last seven games after being perfect on the penalty kill in the first eight games this season…Cal Clutterbuck became the 19th Islander skater to appear in 600 games for the squad; Matt Martin played in his 699th game for the Isles. Clutterbuck is the first player to appear in 600 Islander games after debuting for another NHL team…Clayton Keller assisted on both goals, giving him consecutive multi-point games.…Jean-Gabriel Pageau won 18 of 23 draws just two games after winning 20 of 25 vs. Calgary; his recent success has raised his face-off percentage over 60% for the season and into the top ten in the NHL.

First Times in a Really Long Time

The Coyotes blanked the Isles in New York for the first time since moving to the desert.  The original Jets had one shutout against the Isles, but they did not win the game.  Chico Resch and Markus Mattsson were in nets for a scoreless tie on February 12, 1980.

The Isles won at least 40 draws and at least 70% of the face-offs in the same game (40/57 70.2%) for the first time since winning 50 of 70 (71.4%) on December 21, 2001, at Madison Square Garden.  That is the only other time in the real time era this has happened.

The Never Say Dielanders strike again. Brock Nelson and Anders Lee scored 1:44 apart in the third period as the Islanders rallied for the second straight night from a 3-1 third period deficit as they earned a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers before a sellout crowd of 18,006 at Madison Square Garden. 

Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck scored second period power play goals for the Rangers to give them a 3-1 lead heading to the third but when Adam Pelech scored :14 into the third period it put the Isles in position for their second big comeback of the week.

Semyon Varlamov made a season-high 37 saves to continue his success over the Rangers, particularly in the Garden.

The Isles return home to face Arizona on Thursday and Columbus on Saturday.

The Isles did not earn their ninth win of the season last season until December 30th (9-12-6)... Mathew Barzal has eleven assists in the last nine games (0-11-11) … The Isles have outscored their opponents 25-11 in the third period with five of those 22 goals being empty netters …Adam Pelech scored for the first time since February 24, 2022, vs. San Jose; it was his 20th career goal… Kyle Palmieri scored his fifth goal of the season last season on February 22nd …The Isles now lead the NHL with 25 third period goals; they have scored 24 goals in the 1st period, 2nd period and overtime combined … Semyon Varlamov saw his Madison Square Garden shutout streak end at 251:36 on Filip Chytil's goal; he did record his fifth straight win at MSG. The shutout streak is the longest by an Islander goalie on the road by a wide margin (Smith 178:28 vs. Chicago 1977-78)…Vincent Trocheck won 19 of 22 draws for the Rangers…Artemi Panarin earned two assists in his 200th game as a Ranger….There have been 19 times this season a team has rallied from two goals down in the third period to win; the Islanders and Anaheim Ducks are the only teams to do so three times…Kyle Palmieri now has scored five goals against Igor Shesterkin; Sam Reinhart has scored six times vs. Igor and Palmieri is all alone in second place on that list…Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider each extended their point streaks to six games.

Never Say Die

The Isles have trailed in five of their nine wins this season. They now lead the NHL in comeback wins. The Isles won only twice last season when trailing after two periods, and neither were from multiple-goal deficits.

Noah Dobson scored on a 4-on-3 with 58 seconds remaining in overtime as the Islanders rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit for a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames before 15,722 at UBS Arena. 

Mikael Backlund scored twice for Calgary and that looked like it might be enough, until goals by Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri :59 apart turned the game around.

Ilya Sorokin made a season-high 43 saves to keep the Islanders in the game, and eventually win his fifth straight decision.

The Isles play the back end of this back-to-back set on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

Bridgeport split a pair of games over the weekend to run their record to 7-2-1-0.  Bridgeport beat Hartford 5-3 on Saturday but dropped a 1-0 decision to Providence on Sunday. 

Bridgeport heads to Hershey this weekend for games on Friday and Saturday.

Lucas Raymond scored on a 5-on-3 midway through the second period to break a scoreless tie and the  Islanders could never catch them. Ville Husso made 26 saves for his fifth career shutout as the Red Wings blanked the Isles 3-0 before a sellout crowd of 19,515 at Little Caesars Arena.

The Isles were outshot early in both the first and second periods but had 33 shot attempts (14 on goal) in the third period, but it was not enough as they saw their five-game winning streak end.

The Isles play their next four games in New York, beginning with a back-to-back set against Calgary on Monday and at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

The Islanders exploded for four goals in a 10:04 span of the second period to erase a 1-0 St. Louis lead and Ilya Sorokin made it stand up as the Isles extended their winning streak to five straight games with a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues before a crowd of 18,096 at Enterprise Center.

Kyle Palmieri scored fourteen seconds into the middle session to jumpstart the Islander rally as they improve to 7-4-0 on the season.

Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves, giving him 127 on 132 shots in his last four games. 

The road trip concludes on Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

On the Farm

Brock Nelson's goal 7:23 into the third period proved to be the winner as the Isles extended their winning streak to four straight games with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks before a crowd of 12,523 at United Center.

Nelson and Anders Lee had traded credit for the Isles' first goal, but Lee was correctly credited for it.  Zach Parise added one late into an empty net for the Isles, who improved to 6-4-0 on the season 

Ilya Sorokin made 21 saves, giving him 95 on 98 shots in his last three games. 

The Isles won the third period for the fourth straight game; they have outscored their opponents 11-2 in that span. 

The road trip continues Thursday in St. Louis.

The Skinny             

The Isles did not earn their sixth win of the season last season until December 7th (6-10-5)... First Times in a Long Time

The Isles have scored eleven goals in their last four third periods.  The last time that they did this was in October  2017, when they also scored eleven goals in a four-game span.  However, the Isles have not scored more than 11 third period goals in a four-game stretch since November of 1987, when they tied the club record for a 4-game span by with 12 goals.

The Isles scored an Empty Net Goal for the third straight game.  The last time the Isles scored ENG's in three consecutive games was April 11-12-14, 2002 (Roman Hamrlik, Michael Peca and Claude LaPointe).

The Isles have scored 19 third period goals; they had 25 in the first ten third periods in 1984-85 – that is the only time in club history that they scored more than 19 through ten games.

Offense from Defense

The Islander defense have scored nine goals; they didn't score their ninth goal last season until January 18th.  The Isles have two defensemen with three goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 47 (February 24th in San Jose).

The nine defense goals lead the NHL; the Isles have also gotten fourteen assists from defensemen, making the season total 23 points.

Zach Attack 

Zach Parise scored his 412th career goal, good for 8th among actives.  Next-up are Garry Unger and Islander Assistant Coach John MacLean, who are tied for 92nd place with 413 goals.
