Minnesota 3, Isles 1

Frederick Gaudreau scored the tying goal on a shorthanded rush midway through the 3rd period and Sam Steel scored the winning goal 93 seconds later as the Minnesota Wild rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Islanders before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena. 

Scott Mayfield scored a first period goal for the Isles and it stood up for nearly 34 minutes before the Gaudreau shorty turned the game around.  Kirill Kaprizov added his 25th goal into an empty net to finish the scoring.

The Isles fell to 22-18-3 and are 1-4-1 since the calendar turned to 2023.  The middle game of this five-game home stand is on Saturday against Montreal.

The Skinny   

The Isles did not reach 22 wins last season until March 10th (22-24-8)... On the Farm

Bridgeport dropped their eleventh straight game (0-8-2-1) with a 3-1 defeat to Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. The Islanders have fallen to 14-14-6-1 on the season.

Andy Andreoff scored his team-leading 18th goal, while Chis Terry padded his team lead in assists (23) and points (34).   

Bridgeport visit Lehigh Valley Friday in the back-end of the home-and-home.

Season Series Stats

The Canadiens won their only previous visit to UBS, defeating the Isles in a shootout last February.  The Isles have only two wins over Les Habitants in their last 12 New York games (2-7-3) but the Isles did sweep a pair of games in Montreal last season. 

Note that this game is a 7:00 start.

Jason Robertson scored on Dallas' first shot of the game and then scored the only goal in the shootout as the Dallas Stars defeated the Islanders 4-1 before a crowd of 16,412 at UBS Arena. 

Anders Lee scored a first period goal for the Isles, tying him with Brock Nelson for the team lead in goals. 

The Isles are 22-17-3 and continue this home stand on Thursday against Dallas.

On the Farm

Bridgeport got two goals from Cole Bardreau and one from Chris Terry but fell 6-3 to Providence on Saturday for their tenth straight loss (0-7-2-1). The Islanders have fallen to 14-13-6-1 on the season.

Andy Andreoff continues to lead the team with 17 goals, while Chis Terry leads the team in assists (22) and points (33).   

Bridgeport hosts Lehigh Valley in the front-end of a home-and-home on Wednesday.

Milan Lucic and Blake Coleman scored 1:29 apart to give the Flames a 2-0 lead 6:05 in, and Calgary defeated the Islanders 4-1 before a crowd of 18,837 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Zach Parise scored the only goal for the Islanders but by then Calgary had built a 3-0 lead.  The Isles played without Mathew Barzal, who could not go after taking warmups.  His absence ended his goal-scoring streak at a career-best five games.

The Isles end the first half with a 22-17-2 record and now head home to begin a five-game homestand on Tuesday against Dallas.

Leon Draisaitl and Kailer Yamamoto scored first period special team goals and the Islanders could never get equal, as the Edmonton Oilers earned a 4-2 win over the Islanders before a crowd of 17,755 at Rogers Place.

Mathew Barzal extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-best five games; he has seven goals in the last seven games and eight times in the last ten games.  Ilya Sorokin, playing in his eighth straight game, made 34 saves.  

The Isles fall to 22-16-2 and head to Calgary for the second-half of this back-to-back to conclude this road trip and the first-half of the 82-game schedule.

On the Farm

Bridgeport dropped a 5-2 decision to Providence on Wednesday to open 2023.  The Islanders have fallen to 14-12-5-1 on the season after having gone 1-9-1-1 in the last dozen games.

Andy Andreoff is tied-5th in the AHL with a team-leading 17 goals, while Chis Terry leads the team in assists (22) and points (31).   Cory Schneider will look to pick up where he was prior to his recall; he is 10-3-2 on the season in Bridgeport.

Bridgeport will visit Springfield on Friday and then host Providence for the second time in four days on Wednesday.

The last time the Isles beat Edmonton twice in one season was in 2002-03.

The Islanders will look to sweep the season series from the Flames as they visit Calgary on Friday to conclude the back-to-back and the four-game road trip.  

The Isles rallied for a 4-3 victory on a Noah Dobson overtime power play goal on November 7th and will be looking to sweep the Flames for the first time since 2015-16.  

This is the 41st game of the campaign, meaning that the 50th anniversary regular season will be half over following this contest.   The Isles will have played 23 of their first 41 on the road, but a season-long 5-game homestand begins on Tuesday.

You can go home again.  Mathew Barzal scored a goal and added two assists while Parker Wotherspoon recorded his first NHL point as the Islanders overcame a 1-0 deficit for a 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks before a sellout crowd of 18,912 at Rogers Arena.

Barzal now has five goals in his career-best 4-game goal streak; he has also scored six times in the last six games and seven times in the last nine games. He also became the first player born in British Columbia to record points in his first eight games against the Canucks (2-10-12); Wotherspoon is also a BC native.

Ilya Sorokin, playing in his seventh straight game, made 24 saves to earn the win.  

The Isles improve to 22-15-2 and pass the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card spot. The Isles head to Edmonton and Calgary for back-to-back games to conclude this road trip and the first-half of the 82-game schedule.

The Skinny   

The Isles did not reach 22 wins last season until March 10th (22-24-8)... The Isles have outscored the opposition 51-38 in the third period…Mathew Barzal took over the team scoring lead with a three-point game; it is the first time Barzal has reached 40 points before game 40…Barzal also became the 16th player in club history to record 250 assists; he is only the second Islander in the last 28 years to have 30 assists before the 40-game mark (Josh Bailey did it in 31 games in 2017-18)…Barzal now has a team-leading 10 goals over the last 21 games... The Isles went 1-2 on the power play; they are 2-7 over the last three games but only 2-32 over the past 11 games…The Isles are 4-1-0 in their last five games, and are seven games over NHL-.500 for the third time…Parker Wotherspoon, who grew up attending Canuck games, recorded his first NHL point in his fifth NHL game…Jean-Gabriel Pageau matched a career-high with eight hits.  Pageau also scored goals on both the power play and shorthanded in the same game for the second time this season (November 23 vs. Edmonton)…Pageau now leads the team in both power play goals (5) and shorthanded goals (2)…Brock Nelson is now just five assists away from matching his career high (28)…Luke Schenn played in his 900th NHL game…Casey Cizikas scored for the third time in eleven games…The Isles have scored at least six goals four times this season after doing so only three times all last season… It was the 10th comeback win of the season for the Isles…Bo Horvat recorded his 28th multi-goal game (he has only one hat trick).

First Times in a Long Time

• Jean-Gabriel Pageau is only the second Islander to be credited with a power play goal and a shorthanded goal in the same game twice in one season.  Brent Sutter did it on January 13 and March 31, 1990.  Sutter is the only Islander to do so three times in his career; Pageau joins Patrick Flatley, Pat LaFontaine and Ziggy Palffy in the group that have done it twice.  

• Vancouver was credited with only three blocked shots; it is the first time since March 23, 201,4 that an opponent (Columbus) was credited with three or fewer.  It had not happened in an Islander road game since 2009 in New Jersey.

The Islanders will look to sweep a multi-game season series from the Oilers as they visit Edmonton on Thursday.  The last time the Isles beat Edmonton twice in one season was in 2002-03, when the won 4-2 at the Coliseum in November and 5-2 in Edmonton in March.

The Isles are 1-6-3 in their ten trips to Edmonton since that win in March 2003; however, they are 1-1-2 in their last four visits.  The Isles defeated Edmonton 3-0 at UBS on November 23rd; they have lost only once in regulation at home to the Oilers this century (12-1-2)

Eeli Tolvanen, making his Kraken debut, broke a 1-1 tie with a power play goal at 3:58 of the second period as the Seattle Kraken defeated the Isles 4-1 and snap New York's three-game winning streak before a before a sellout crowd of 17,151 at Climate Pledge Arena.

Mathew Barzal, playing his 400th NHL goal scored his 100th career goal for the only Islander tally. Barzal now has four goals in his 3-game goal streak; he has also scored five times in the last five games and six times in the last eight games. Ilya Sorokin, playing in his sixth straight game, made 31 saves.

The Isles fall to 21-15-2 and are now with the Penguins for the second wild card spot. The Penguins hold the spot because they have played two fewer games. The Isles head to Vancouver to continue this four-game Western swing on Tuesday.

The Skinny   

The Isles did not reach 21 wins last season until March 5th (21-23-8)... The Isles have outscored the opposition 48-38 in the third period…Mathew Barzal tied Brock Nelson for the team scoring lead with 37 points…The Isles went 0-2 on the power play; they are 1-30 over the past ten games…The loss ended the Isles' three-game win streak; it was the first time since November 21-26th (4 games) that the Isles had won at least three consecutive games.  The Isles missed an opportunity to go eight games over NHL-.500 for the first time this season …After outshooting the opposition in all nine periods of the homestand, the Isles were out-shot in each period, and 35-19 for the game…Adam Larsson extended his point streak to six games with his first period goal…Yanni Gourde had a pair of assists, giving him 12 points (6-6-12) in 12 regular season games against the Isles; Gourde also scored the only goal of Tampa Bay's Game 7 win over the Isles in June 2021…It was the first time since November 11th (20 games) that Seattle allowed one goal or fewer.

On the Farm

Bridgeport ended 2022 with a 6-3 loss to Springfield on Friday night. The Islanders are 14-11-5-1 on the season after having gone 1-8-1-1 in the last eleven games.

Andy Andreoff is tied-4th in the AHL with a team-leading 17 goals, while Chis Terry leads the team in assists (22) and points (30).

Bridgeport opens 2023 by hosting Providence on both Wednesday and Saturday, with a trip to Springfield Friday sandwiched in between.

Seattle leads the season series, 1 game to 0 (and 2 points to 0).   The teams will meet again on February 7th at UBS Arena to complete the season series.

The Islanders will head about 140 miles north, and into Canada, as they visit Vancouver in the second game of a four-game road trip.

This will be the first meeting of the season between the teams; the Isles have had a lot of success at Rogers Arena in recent years, going 4-0-2 in their last six visits. Overall, the Isles have points in 11 of their last 12 meetings with Vancouver (7-1-4).
