Artemi Panarin scored two goals and added three assists as the Rangers overcame an early Jordan Eberle goal to defeat the Isles 6-2 before a crowd of 17,403 at Madison Square Garden.

Panarin is the first Ranger since Don Maloney (2-4-1981) to record five points in a game against the Isles. 

 

This is the front-end of a home-and-home for the Rangers; the Isles will host Detroit on Tuesday before welcoming the Blueshirts to the Coliseum on Thursday.

The Skinny      

The Isles scored a power play goal in the third period; a late power play attempt ended the club record streak of two power play attempts or fewer in nine straight games…Noah Dobson played a career-high 20:24; he was not on the ice for any Ranger goal…Jordan Eberle scored 18 seconds into his 700th NHL game…The Isles are now 1-2-4 in the last seven games they have scored in the first 25 seconds…Eberle's goal was the earliest for an Islander since Nick Leddy scored on Cam Talbot 0:13 into a game with Edmonton on 11/5/2016…Three Rangers were +3, while Artemi Panarin was +4….Panarin, who leads the NHL in even-strength points this season recorded his second career 5-point game and his 4th consecutive home game with at least three points….Panarin is the first opponent with five points against the Isles since Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby did so on 3/10/2013 and the first to have a game with at least 5 points and at least a +4 rating since Olli Jokinen (2-4-6, +6) for Florida on March 17, 2007...There were two fights, both in the first period.  It was the first Islander-Ranger game with multiple fights since November 15, 2011 when Mike Mottau fought Sean Avery and Matt Martin fought Brandon Prust...Semyon Varlamov allowed six goals for the first time as an Islander.

The last two Islander home games vs. Detroit both ended in extra time; a come-from-behind 7-6 OT win in Brooklyn in February 2018 and a shootout win at the Coliseum in December 2018.

The Skinny on the Missing PPs

The Isles have had only three power plays total in the last four games, including none in New Jersey on Tuesday.  

Power Plays became an official NHL statistic for the 1977-78 season.  Prior to this season, the Isles had never had one power play or fewer in four straight games; they had a five game streak early this season (the first five games of the 17-game point streak) and now have a second streak of four straight games.

The three power plays over a four game stretch also tie a team record, done over overlapping stretches this past October (games 1-4 and games 2-5 of the 17-game point streak).

The Isles have had only 95 power plays so far this season (2.2 per game);this is 26 fewer than any other NHL team (Anaheim 121).  The Isles have had two power plays or fewer in nine straight games.  Prior to this season, the fewest power plays that the Isles had had in the first 43 games was 115 (in 1977-78).

With nearly half of a season still to play, the Isles have had one power play or fewer 15 times; Toronto is the only other team with as many as 11 games with one power play or fewer.  The Isles club record is 16 (set in 2016-17); the Isles also had one power play or fewer 15 times in both 2015-16 and 2018-19.

The Isles are currently on pace for 181 power plays for the season; the NHL record for fewest PPs in a full (non-lockout) season is 191, set by the Atlanta Flames in 1977-78.  The Isles had 226 power plays in 1977-78; that club record for fewest power plays will be beaten unless the Isles average 3.4 power plays/game the rest of the way.

The Isles and Rangers will face-off for the first time in 366 days on Monday.  It's also the fifth time in the last six seasons that the rivals have met on either January 12th, 13th, or 14th.

Patrice Bergeron scored the game-winning goal 1:33 into overtime as the Boston Bruins defeated the Isles 3-2 before a crowd of 14,962 at Barclay's Center.

Scott Mayfield and Mathew Barzal scored for the Isles, with Barzal's goal at 9:33 of the third forcing overtime.  It was one of six shots in the third period for Barzal, who finished with a career-high nine shots on goal.

 

The Isles are 7-3 in games decided by an overtime goal and 27-12-4 overall.

Historical Advanced Stats Night for Devon Toews

Devon Toews, who had a +25 Corsi rating (5-on-5), was on-ice for 22 of the Isles' 37 shots on goal, and only three even-strength Bruin shots.  At 5-on-5, Toews was on-ice for 13 Isles high-danger chances, and only two for Boston.

Toews is the first Isles to go +25 since Travis Hamonic in 2016, and only the third since these stats were officially compiled by the NHL beginning in 2009-10.  Toews was +20 when the score was tied; that's the highest rating for any Isles since the statistic was computed.

For the first time in 366 days, the two New York teams will face each other as the Isles meet the Rangers for the first of three meetings in nine days.

The Rangers are actually the last visitor to win a regular season game in regulation at Barclays, defeating the Isles last January 12th by a 2-1 score.  That game allowed the Rangers to earn a split of last year's season series, with each team winning once at home and once on the road.

The Isles have shined on Broadway in recent years, going 11-3 in their last 14 trips to Manhattan, including two shootout wins.  

Mathew Barzal has gone 4-10-14 in eight career games against the Rangers, including a five-point game at the Garden as a rookie.

Igor Shesterkin has won each of his first two games for the Blueshirts, stopping 75 of 81 shots.  

It will be the Isles' first game against the Rangers since they signed Artemi Panarin as a free agent.  Panarin has gone 1-2-3 in each of the Rangers' last three home games and has a point in six straight at the Garden (3-9-12).  He has 41 points in the 21 Ranger wins this season.

Anders Lee scored the game-winning goal for the second straight night, but this one came at 4:09 of overtime as the Islanders rallied to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 before a crowd of 14,518 at the Prudential Center.

It was the first career overtime goal for Lee; the Isles have scored an NHL-leading seven overtime goals this season and improve to 7-2 in games decided by an overtime goal.

The Isles improve to 27-12-3 record; their 57 points are good for a share of 4th place in the entire NHL.

The Skinny      

The Isles tallied four times after they scored only 13 goals in their prior seven games… Kyle Palmieri's goal, on the only penalty of the game, snapped an Isle streak of going 13-13 on the penalty kill in the prior six games...The Isles did not have a power play (for the third time this season); they are 0-12 in the last eight games.  The Isles have had two power play attempts or fewer in a club record eight straight games.  League records on attempts date to the late 70's, and the league record is 12 straight games, set by the 1979-80 Hartford Whalers….The Isles had 41 shots on goal; it was their second-highest total of the season (42 in Pittsburgh November 19th) …Barry Trotz coached his 124th  Isles game, tying Steve Stirling for 9th place on the all-time list and recorded his 75th win, passing Ted Nolan for 5th place… The Isles improve to 15-3-3 in one-goal games while the Devils are 9-2-7…Thomas Greiss recorded his first win since December 12th; it's his 12th win of the season.  Pittsburgh is the only other NHL team with two goalies with at least 12 wins…The first two Devils goals were scored (in reverse order) by the Devils who scored in their 2-1 win over the Isles on January 2nd….Ben Street earned an assist on PK Subban's goal; it was his first NHL assist since October 18, 2018 (for Anaheim, against the Isles)…Tom Kuhnhackl scored for the third time in six games…Jordan Eberle's goal was his first since December 14th vs. Buffalo…Eight of Mathew Barzal's 126 career assists have come in overtime; the seven prior OT helpers were all primary assists.

Look at Me, I'm Anders Lee

Anders Lee now has four game-winning goals this season, including two in two days.  It is the second time in his career that he has scored the winning goal on consecutive days (December 19-20, 2014).  Brock Nelson is the only other Islander to do so in the last 12 years (April 8-9, 2017).

Greiss Earns a Place in the History Books

Thomas Greiss drew the only penalty in tonight's game, leading to Kyle Palmieri's lead goal in the third.  He became the second goalie in NHL history [Gary Smith (1-4-1968, 2nd period,  playing for Oakland, against Detroit)] to draw the only penalty in an NHL game. Season Series Stats

The Isles will enjoy three days off; it is the last time in the regular season that the team will go three days without a games (except for the bye/all-star break).

They will then return to action on Saturday as they meet the Bruins for the second time this season; the Isles won in a shootout in Boston in mid-December.

It will be only the 6th Islander game at Barclays Center this season (4-0-1) and their first since November 30th.

The Bruins have had the Isles' number in recent years and have won eight straight against the Isles in New York (five in Brooklyn and three in Uniondale) with all eight wins coming in regulation.  The last Isles home win vs. Boston was at the Coliseum on November 2, 2013 by a 3-1 score; Kevin Poulin was the winning netminder and Andrew MacDonald scored the winning goal.

Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves for his 2nd shutout as an Islander and Anders Lee scored the game's only goal at 6:54 of the third period as the Islanders defeated the Colorado Avalanche 1-0 before a crowd of 13,241 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Both of Varlamov's shutouts this season have been by a 1-0 score (November 2nd in Buffalo); this one comes in his first career appearance against the Avs.  Varlamov now holds shutouts against 15 different teams and has recorded 27 clean sheet in his career.

The victory snaps a two-game Isles losing streak and a four-game home winless streak (0-3-1); the Isles hit the midpoint of the campaign with a 26-12-3 record; their 55 points are good for a share of 4th place in the entire NHL.

The Isles had gone 129:21 without a goal before Lee's tally; they have scored only twice in the last three games and have scored only 13 goals in their last seven games… The Isles killed both Avs power plays (without allowing a shot) as they are now a perfect 13-13 over the last six games...The Isles failed on their only power play; they are 0-12 in the last seven games. It's only the 2nd time in club history that neither team has scored a power play goal in six straight games (the club record of 7 was set in March 2019) ….  The Isles have had two power play attempts or fewer in a club record-tying seven straight games.  League records on attempts date to the late 70's, and the league record is 12 straight games, set by the 1979-80 Hartford Whalers….The Isles blocked 33 shots, tying the club record (set October 19, 2019 vs. Columbus). Brock Nelson had four of them (all in the first period) to tie a career high …Barry Trotz coached his 123rd  Isles game, passing Doug Weight for 10th place on the all-time list and recorded his 74th win, matching Ted Nolan's total for 5th place… The Isles now own wins against the top two teams (besides themselves) in all four divisions….The Isles improve to 14-3-3 in one-goal games while the Avs fall to 5-3-4…While Colorado is the highest-scoring team in the league, the Isles now hold a better goal differential in the third period (+3 to +1)…The Isles have won three games by shutout this season and Anders Lee has scored the winning goal in two of them (November 30 vs. Columbus – combined shutout)…While Semyon Varlamov is only 3-2-0 in the last four games, he has stopped 142 of 150 shots for a 1.62 GAA and a 94.7 save percentage.

Michael Hutchinson made 33 save for his 5th career shutout while Pierre Engvall and Auston Mathews scored 2:42 apart in the second period to break a scoreless tie as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Isles 3-0 before a sellout crowd of 19,536 at Scotiabank Arena.

Zach Hyman added an empty-net goal as the Isles dropped their second straight game to open 2020 and fall to 25-12-3 on the season.

The Leafs are 9-0-1 in their last ten games. It's the first time since March 26- April 15, 2006 that the Leafs have earned a point in ten straight games.  The Isles did prevent the Leafs from becoming the first NHL team since 1993 to score at least four goals in ten straight games.
