Buffalo 6, Isles 3       

Victor Olofsson broke a 3-3 tie with 2:55 to play and later added the second of two empty net goals as the Buffalo Sabres extended the Islander losing streak to three games with a 6-3 decision before a crowd of 9,296 at KeyBank Center.

Kyle Palmieri scored a pair of goals in his return to the lineup as the Islanders erased one-goal deficit three separate times. However, it was not enough as the Isles fell three games below NHL-.500 (17-20-6) for the first time in nearly seven weeks.

The Skinny         

The Isles allowed the first goal for the ninth time in ten games... Ilya Sorokin suffered his third straight loss; he has allowed three goals or more in six of his last seven games… Mathew Barzal became the first Islander with 20 assists... Victor Olofsson's goals were his first since October 30th ; he is 5-5-10 in 13 games against the Isles...Mark Pysyk played in his 500th NHL goal…The Isles allowed at least 40 shots for the fourth time this season…The Isles allowed a pair of empty-net goals for the third time this season (at MIN 11/7, CLG 11/20)…It was the 25th career multi-goal game (regular season only) for Kyle Palmieri and his first as an Islander; Kyle did have a 2-goal game to open last season's playoffs…Both Palmieri and Sebastian Aho played their first games since their wives gave birth…The Isles are 1-17-2 when trailing after two periods...…It's the first time since February 13, 2011 that the Isles have allowed six goals to Buffalo.

Bridgeport fell to 17-20-5-4 on the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Rochester on Tuesday to open a three-game homestand. Bridgeport hosts Hershey on Saturday night and Hartford on Sunday afternoon.

The Flames got goals from five different players and 13 Calgary players had points as they extended their win streak to six games by defeating the Islanders 5-2, before a COVID-limited crowd of 9,639 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Noah Dobson and J-G Pageau had the goals for the Isles; Dobson leads all Islander defensemen with 19 points.  However, it was not enough as the Isles fell two games below NHL-.500 (17-19-6) for the first time in four weeks.

Bridgeport fell to 17-20-4-4 on the season with a 2-0 loss in Charlotte on Saturday as the teams split a back-to-back set.  The Islanders head home to face Rochester on Tuesday. 

Season Series Stats

Calgary sweeps the season series 2 games to 0 (and 4 points to 0).

The Flames have won the last four meetings (and six of the last seven) between the teams.  It is the longest Islander losing streak vs. Calgary since the Flames won eight straight games between 1997 and 2002.

This was the first game between the teams in Calgary since February 20, 2019.

Cody Ceci scored the opening goal with 56.6 seconds to play in the opening period, but it was Zach Hyman's 100th NHL goal, scored midway through the second period that turned out to be the winner as they defeated the Islanders 3-1, before a COVID-limited crowd of 9,150 at Rogers Place.

Anthony Beauvillier scored a power play goal for the Isles and Oliver Wahlstrom hit the post on a third period play that would have tied the game, but 37 saves from Mike Smith pushed the Isles once again below NHL-.500 (17-18-6) at the halfway point of their season.

Jay Woodcroft, who replaced Dave Tippett earlier this week, earned the victory in his NHL coaching debut.

The Isles head to Calgary to conclude the Western Canada portion of the road trip as they face the Flames for the 2nd time this season.

Calgary has the distinction of earning the first victory at UBS Arena, defeating a COVID-infected Islander squad 5-2 on November 20th; Brock Nelson had the two Islander tallies in that game. 

The Flames have gone out of the break red hot – defeating Vegas and Toronto by a combined score of 11-2.

This will be the first game between the teams in Calgary since February 20, 2019; the Isles were in Calgary when the rest of the regular season was cancelled in March 2020.  Mike Smith was the winning goalie and Austin Czarnik had the winning goal in that 2019 game.

The Isles scored their fastest three goals in the post-dynasty era as part of their biggest first period since 1996 as they defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-3, before a COVID-limited crowd of 9,268 at Rogers Arena.

Ilya Sorokin made 34 saves, including 16 in the third period, as the Isles once again regained NHL-.500 (17-17-6) and kicked off their four-game road trip with a victory.

The Skinny         

The Isles have allowed only 31 goals in their last fourteen games; their 2.21 goals against average is the 2nd-lowest in the NHL in that span (Colorado - 2.18), dating back to December 30th…This was only the fifth road game in the last 27 for the Isles; they are 3-1-1 in those five games …  The Isles scored the first goal for the first time in seven games...Zach Parise scored his 397th goal in his 1,100th NHL game; he is the 208th player in NHL history to reach that game played milestone.  Only 103 players have more career goals than Parise…Fifteen different skaters were on-ice for the three Islander goals in 31 seconds…A different Islander defenseman had an assist on each of the first four Isles goals…Ilya Sorokin improves to 7-1-0, with a .919 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average in his last eight games.  

First Times in a Ridiculously Long Time

The Isles scored three times in 31 seconds; it was their fastest three goals since Denis Potvin (15:15), Bryan Trottier (15:25) and Bob Bourne (15:42) scored in a 27 second span against the Rangers on October 23, 1983, and the second fastest in team history.  It was also the 2nd-fastest in the NHL in the last 28 years (Los Angeles scored 3 in 30 seconds on October 12, 2019, vs. Nashville).

The Isles scored five goals in the first period for the first time since March 3, 1996, vs. Winnipeg. It was only the third time this season that an NHL team scored at least five goals in the opening session.

OH Canada!

The Isles have won all four games that they have played in Canada this season, winning the games by a combined score of 19-8.  They have scored at least five goals in three of those games (11/4 in Montreal, 12/7 in Ottawa and tonight) – the only three times that they have scored at least five goals in a game this season.

It is the first time that the Isles have won four straight games in Canada since winning six straight between March 10, 2014, and January 2, 2015, and the first time that they have done so in a single season since 1988-89!

Philipp Grubauer made 19 saves to record the first shutout in Kraken history as the Isles hit the All-Star Break one game below NHL-.500 (16-17-6).

Oliver Wahlstrom and Mathew Barzal each scored their 10th goal of the season in the second period as the Isles rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators before a crowd of 15,258 at UBS Arena.

The offense was helped by the defense as the Isles registered a season-high five points from the back line, including two primary assists from Scott Mayfield. The Isles are 8-4-0 in their last twelve games and 11-6-1 in their last 18 games as they once again reach NHL-.500 (16-16-6).

Brandon Duhaime and Joel Eriksson Ek scored 63 seconds apart to give the Minnesota Wild an early 2-0 lead and while the Isles cut the lead to one goal three different times they could not get even, dropping a 4-3 decision before a crowd of 15,518 at UBS Arena.

Brock Nelson, Ross Johnston and Oliver Wahlstrom each scored for the Isles, but they suffered their second consecutive regulation loss for the first time since the end of their eight-game losing streak in November. The Isles are still 7-4-0 in their last eleven games and 10-6-1 in their last 17 games and once again fall below NHL-.500.

The Skinny         

The Isles have allowed only 24 goals in their last eleven games; their 2.18 goals against average is the lowest in the NHL in that span, dating back to December 30th… After starting the season with a 13-game road trip, the Isles have now played 20 of their 37 games this season on home ice…  The Isles have trailed 2-0 in each of their last three games and trailed by two goals at some point in each of their last four games... Ilya Sorokin saw his five-game winning streak end…The Isles scored on their 12th power play shot of the game; it was only their second power play goal in the last eight games… Joel Eriksson Ek's goal was the first power play goal against the Isles in five games…Brock Nelson now has a team-leading 14 goals in 28 games played; it was his 349th career point, tying Frans Nielsen for 17th place in club history...Kevin Fiala extended his point streak to eleven games, but the Isles prevented Mats Zuccarello from doing the same…The Wild have scored at least three goals in eleven straight games…Minnesota is 12-1-2 vs. the East, including 7-0-0 against the Metro…The Isles ended January with a 6-4-0 record…Oliver Wahlstrom scored his team-leading fifth power play goal in the third period; it was his first goal since December 7th in Ottawa…Noah Dobson matched a career-high with seven shots on goal (also 1/18/22 vs. Philadelphia).
