NIno's AHL debut

.... is in a game that started at 11 am this morning in Bridgeport as part of the Geico Connecticut Cup.

Sound Tigers and Ct. Whale are 1-1 after 1 pd.

Nino was not on ice for Bridgeport's goal, scored by Tim Wallace.  He was a -1 in the period.  Based on the +/-, he's playing with Jeremy Colliton and David Ullstrom.

Trevor Gillies is also in Bridgeport's lineup today.

Kabanov update

The oft-traveled Kabanov had 2 third period goals last night as Shawinigan rallied from a 3-1 deficit for a 4-3 win.

Kabanov has now played in 4 games for the Cataractes  (whose name I hope is based on this definition, "a descent of water over a steep surface; a waterfall, especially one of considerable size." as opposed to the opthamalogic term) is 3-2-5 and a +6.

Kerry Fraser on the Overtime Blunder

While I haven't seen any official comment from the NHL, Kerry Fraser had a lot to say about the call that sent Travis Hamonic to the penalty box in overtime.

Kerry also had an interesting point about the ensuing faceoff.

<<By virtue of the numerical strength in overtime and as a result of the Islander penalty the teams would play 4 against 3 with a faceoff to the left of DiPietro in the Islander zone. I understand that linesman Matt MacPherson is a real good kid and a fine young official. On the ensuing faceoff however, Matt committed a rookie mistake by ejecting the lone NY Islander forward, center man Frans Nielsen,  who had been sent out by Capuano to take this crucial draw. Hall of Fame linesmen Matt Pavelich, John D'Amico, Ray Scapinello or any veteran NHL linesman would tell the young man to give that lone forward every opportunity imaginable to take that faceoff and win it!

Defenceman Steve Staios replaced Nielsen and was no match on the draw for a partially turned Joe Thornton who won the draw cleanly to the side wall giving the Sharks end zone possession. The puck never cleared the Islanders zone and Brent Burns snapped the puck past DiPietro for the power play winner.>>

Nino a Sound Tiger ... at least for now.

Trevor Gillies has cleared waivers; the Isles announced that he has been sent to Bridgeport where he will likely make his Sound Tigers season debut at 11 AM Wednesday against the Connecticut Whale (the Rangers top farm club).

He has company, though.  Nino Niederreiter is also heading to Bridgeport.  For Nino it's an (up to) two-week conditioning loan.  He could play as many as 6 games for Bridgeport between now and November13th. 

Nino's conditioning loan actually cost Gillies his spot on the roster.  Players on conditioning loans must be on the active 23-man roster so to send Nino down they had to activate him. With the Isles at the 23-man maximum, the way to activate him was to remove Gillies.

Under normal circumstances, given his age, Nino would not be permitted to go to Bridgeport - it would be either the Isles or back to junior with Portland.  However, conditioning loans are an exception.

The games that Nino plays for Bridgeport do not count towards the games that he will play in the NHL before the Islanders are forced to decide whether they would return him to Juniors.  He can still play in 9 NHL games this season before that decision has to be made.
